Diesels and MPG (mainly cummins and duramax)

I am considering trading my truck in on a cummins or a dura max and I was just wondering what you guys with them are getting for normal non-towing driving for mpg? Right now I have a 08 F350, love the truck except the MPG, best so far is 12.5/gallon. Also if you have had any problems with the engine or transmission and at what miles they were at.

04 cummins, 1 ton, crew, long bed, 6 spd,200k miles, city 17 hwy 22,' edge additude, strait piped,
These numbers are actual over 2 years, and with me driving with an egg under the peddle,
I can have a lot more fun and get a lot worse mileage.

06 Cummins 5.9L. I have done a turbo back exhaust, K&N intake and Edge Juice with Attitude. As long as I keep in under 70 mph I get 18-20 on the highway and around 15-17 in town. I average around 11.5-12.5 towing a 36 foot toy hauler that weighs around 15,000 lbs fully loaded.

Do the DPF delete and a tune that truck will be amazing.
I would if I didn't have to worry about emissions and inspections here, unless I want to install the stock stuff when it goes in each time. Also still have a warranty and not sure if I want to chance screwing that up

I would hate to guess what I would get towing that much weight.

06 Gmc lbz engine 6 speed, exhaust and a reflash. 285's 17.5 avg being nice to it.
Lose the DPF and use an edge on your ford, you will get 5 mpg increase, but have to reinstall every 2 years.
I have to swap my durmies head pipe every 2 years couple hrs work is all.
Got about 9 mpg with 18000#+ goose neck and cruise set at 75 going to st George

Didn't the inspection law change this las legislative session? I know they did not do away with it, but they did increase the time between inspection. I just can't recall what that time period is.

If purchasing a new enough Duramax that would still have powertrain warranty (5yr/100k) you would void the warranty. Once it's all out of warranty, do as you please.

And inspections will be changed to every 4th, 8th, and 10th year for the first 10 years then every year for vehicles older than that. As for emissions, that's a county thing so I'm sure they want your money every year? I wouldn't know since I don't have to deal with them :D

I would just keep my truck registered in washington at my house there since where I live I don't have to do emissions, and we don't have safety inspections there, but since I need to get resident pricing for school here I can't.

There was a company who was claiming they could get 23+ miles per gallon with your 08 and up power stroke. They did it with the dpf delete, computer tuning, and a free spin kit in the front axle. I can't remember which company it is but, they advertise in diesel power all the time.

To answer your question in my 2010 mega cab dually 4x4 I can knock down 20.4 mpg empty. Hauling I can get about 10 with around 18500 behind her. In town she only gets about 15 or so empty.

I would not give up on your ford just yet. And it pains me to say that since I am a dodge guy. You still can install a cold air intake and the free spin kit without having the inspection police on your case. The free spin kit by itself should gain you between two and four mpg.

The thing to me though is that for the dpf delete, exhaust, tuner, thats around $2k, then if I did that free spin, thats another $1500 or so. Then it would take a while just to get that to pay off in the saving in fuel economy and I still would have to swap the piping back in for inspections or dealer work as long as its still under warranty. Or I could probably trade my truck straight across for a dodge or chevy that gets much better mpg and still not have to worry about swapping parts, but I also hate to get rid of my ford. My wife just told me that there is no way I am trading my truck also since I told her it was my long term truck (I have gone through a few trucks over the past few years) but i never researched what the mpg were.

Doesn't your truck already have hubs? They might be the crappy vacuum lockouts?

I don't check my truck's mileage a whole lot but I think I get about 10-12 towing and about 14-17 mpg on my commute. I really don't see the 20-22 mpg like other people claim for my "mileage truck" (2004 555 Cummins). I've hand calc'd 19.2 or similarish on a trip Woods Cross/Logan/Woods Cross when I kept the speed under 75 mph.

I get about 16-17 average, just drove to SLC from Denver partially with and without trailer. 17 without, 12-13 with. Lots of hills here in CO, hard towing. My trailer is about 7500 lbs total, I generally set cruise about 75 mph.

Empty if I go slower (like right at 65) I've seen around 21, but with most every highway speed limit at 75 its rare that I go any distance at that speed.

My D-max consistently gets 17 MPG probably due to 4" of lift and 35" mud grapplers and high HP. Most stock duramaxes can get into the low 20's

How in the world are you getting 17? I have a 2006 Chevy 2500 duramax 6inch bds lift with brand new 35 inch toyo open country ats and my trip down to vegas with cruise set the whole time at 72 i got 14.5
