(A few pics will be coming tomorrow) My son-in-law and I were trying to think of a different place to go wheeling yesterday (24th) and didn't want to do the Snakes or Lil Moab again. We decided that Price would be a nice change of pace and not that much farther. I called Carl Plus for directions and he hooked me up with Herzog's number. Shane was very helpful with directions and the new Map section here was great, if I hadn't been stupid.
We pulled into Price about 11:00 and stopped at the Chevron, as we were packing up Great Scott pulled up and introduced himself. Also gave us his number in case we needed some local assistance. Sure enough, when I pulled out of the Chevron, I didn't get back on the main road and we were calling Scott in about 15 minutes. He got us lined out and I found the water tank Herzog described, and we were golden from there.
Jared has a 100" wheel base YJ, Tera CRD rear axle and high pinion 60 front, Atlas, SBC, all the good stuff. I had my LTJ. Both rigs on 37" Krawlers. We also had a friend with us that has a tubed YJ, but it's in the shop at the moment. It turned out that it was good thing to have all 3 of us along to help with spotting and stuff.
Diff Hanger was a nice drive. Judgement Day was a total blast. It didn't rain on us but had rained the night before. The trail was MUDDY between obstacles. The gate keeper was fun and with some good spotting I got past the rock that snatched Carl's rear quarter. I ended using my winch twice, once on the set of 3 obstacles that are close together, and once on the big straddle area. Jared had fallen into that hole and had a heck of time getting out, and it was, muddy and hard to find traction. Not sure we would have needed the winches if we had more traction.
Damage report, Jared had a log flip up in an easy part of the trail and took out his left rear tail light and gas filler thng. He has a fuel cell the filler was just there to fill the hole and not a loss. He also sustained a crunched front fender and numerous body dents and scratches. I ripped a front left brake hard line off the frame after completing the 3 obstacle combo. We pinched it off and I had 3 crappy brakes left. I mangled 2 flares pretty badly, once causing body damage to the right front fender. Scratched and slightly dented my left rear quarter panel right where I stretched it and lots of bumper and rocker scratches. Overall a successful trip.
We want to go back when Scott's rig is finished and run it again, and maybe do the Pinacles, but I'm at a dilemma. I love running hard trails like that, but really have too much custom body work into my Jeep to bash it like I did. Scott and Jared really worked hard to keep my body off the rocks. I could finish the LTJ and sell it for enough to buy a capable buggy, but I love driving it on the road and it's a blast to run around Moab in a street legal rig. I can't afford to have a buggy and a nice Jeep. Any suggestions?
