I have differential fluid leaking out of the joint where my drive line connects to the rear differential on a 97 xj. Why?

You will need to check pinion preload as well when you change the seal - your pinion preload is likely set with a crush sleeve which is not meant to be reused once the pinion nut is removed. The proper way to do it is to change the crush sleeve when you replace the seal.

Right, but a '97 XJ has either a Dana 35 or a Chrysler 8.25". Both use crush sleeves to set pinion preload. So in this case, the information is relevant.
