Kinda a spin off from my other thread.
Anybody know anything about dirt basements? We have one....
I wasn't to worried, but if I buy the place, I want to make sure it is ok. I have no idea what is acceptable as far as dirt basements go. Is it legal code wise? What should I worry about??

my crawl space is dirt--but it's covered by plastic so It's not too bad I guess. I won't go down there though (spiders)

Marc, e mail me a photo of it.

Well, when I get home I will shoot a couple....
Imagine a shelf basement with one good block/concreate wall (where the stair to it are/outside entrence) ant the other 3 sides are/were sort of shelf, but now more of a slope....dirt floor. Furnace is sitting on bricks, water heater is on wood, may be brick under that. One small room is 70% finished, the rest is a tall crawl space.

I'd be very careful, find the engineered drawing for the foundation, if it was built anytime in the last 30 years the city *should* have plans. if it has poured footers, you're probabbly okay, if they're not poured, I'd run.

both of my grandparents had older homes with dirt basements. I remember playing in that dirt as a kid; lighting my model cars on fire!:ugh: Not saying it was good, but it was there.. :D

30 years? I'd guess the house is at least 70 old.

My parents house is like 1918 I think and it doesn't have a dirt basement.

Seems like you have a reasonably large lot, pull the house down with the bronco and live out of a tent for a summer until while you build a new nicer house.

I hear nanoman is good at contruction ;)

That would be the plan, but a few years away....

Before you by it have it inspected. I have a friend that does such a thing. Trust me, it is worth it.

Let me know if you need his name and company.
