Dirtbiking the Swell?

I had such a good time in the swell last weekend that I just have to get back down there :D

This time (Mar 13-14) I'd be taking the Kraftfahrzeuge Trunkenpolz Mattighofen 300XC out for some two wheeled action. I'm still not totally familiar with the area and was wondering... If you were to head to the Swell what trails or roads would you ride on? I'm headed down with some very experienced riders and we really enjoy the technical stuff. I was thinking the devels race track, but I noticed that there are a few single tracks in the area as well. Would we be better off exploring those? Thanks for any help you can give :greg:

Andrew, that place we had lunch last Friday is the trailhead of a huge network of dirt bike trails. I might be wrong, but I the the five miles of hell is in that area. If you get that Map I told you about from Anderson750, I'm real sure that tail is on that map. Sorry, mine isn't available right now or I'd look.

Get the "San Rafael Motorized Route Designations" map. It's free, and shows all the legal roads & trails in the Swell. Be aware that the Swell is "limited to designated roads & trails", so you can only ride on routes that are designated open to your particular use as shown on the aforementioned map.

Call the BLM Price Field Office at 435-636-3600 to find out where to get a copy. I believe the August 2006 printing is the most recent. An earlier printing had an error, and the original 2003 map was nearly worthless unless you already knew the area. I would not recommend the new National Geographic San Rafael Swell map... get the freebee, it's better.

Try the "Red Trail" before attempting 5MOH. It's a small dose of what to expect on 5MOH. If you have problems on the Red Trail, it'd be best not to ride 5MOH. There are others trails that are less difficult (get the map).

It's not what I'd call a huge, or even big, singletrack trail system. But the handful of trails, when used with connecting 4WD routes, are enough to make for a day of good riding. Two if you don't cover much ground in a day.

Spend a minute over on MotoUtah.com, there are dozens of riders there extremely familiar with the Swell and hundreds of trip reports. I'm getting excited to get down there on my bike too!

Wow thanks for all informative reply's :greg:

I think I'll pass on 5MOH. I forget that I can't even come close to riding with the ability that I once had. A few years ago I'd be all over a trip like that.

I'm getting so excited for this trip--I just can't wait! Hopefully I get my damper back from Scotts in time they're nice in that terrain :D
