Code requires 4 wire for new installations, but a lot of older equipment only uses 3 wire. I use the bottom row second from the left for everything, 50 amp will barely run a lot of top quality equipment. Plugging a 30 amp unit into a 50 amp plug will not protect the 30 amp equipment but it will protect up stream circuitry. I have adapter cables for items that are different than what I have on the wall. YMMV. Tim
Oh and if you want to back feed a generator into the system, get a real disconnect meant for it and feed that back to your breaker panel. Also if you want to run a welder, do not use a GFI type breaker, welders will trip it.
