Does This Water Heater Look Safe?

Here are some pics of my water heater in my apartment. Do you think this thing looks unsafe? I'd really hate to have it blow up while one of us is doing laundry since it's about one foot from the washer.-_-

Coincidentally one of the connection pipes has a slow drip which is causing some of the rust on the top. And that black stuff isn't mold, just more corrosion.

Even though it looks bad, I'll bet it's still safe. At least the top part--all the crap you're seeing is due to the leaky connection, which explains the mineral deposits on the connection, as well as the deposits and rust on the top of the heater.

The important parts that rust out are inside where you can't see. The stuff you're seeing is just the outer "shell", which won't affect functionality.

Fix the leak and your good. Since you are renting have your landlord do it for you.

I say chuck a piece or two of raw chicken up there, wait a few weeks, and then see what it looks like. If you're lucky, the mold and bacteria will seal that leak right up! Also, the smell will make you stand further away from it while you're doing laundry thus increasing the safety factor!

It may or may not work, just watch out for the fake third nipple.
