Drain Lake Powell!!!

I was in Sid Sports in SLC yesterday and saw a Bumper Sticker that said
"Save the Colorado". I asked the owner what it was all about and he said it was about draining Lake Powell. I WAS SHOCKED!! A local sporting shop that promotes, Skiing, Sailing, kayaking, snowshoeing etc, taking such an extreme enviromental position. I asked what was wrong with free power, jobs and the potential economic disaster for the towns along the way, WATER STORAGE!!!, the economic pit for cleanup if drained. He said "THEY would work it out!!!" I went on......he didn't want to play....
I patronized Sid's for along time......
I think Sid needs to consider what this could mean, just ask Rocky?

If they do, keep an eye out. I lost a quarter, a dime, six pennys, my pocket knife, and a book of matches. I really want the matches back because they were from that place that has all the good looking hook......

Rafters and crew have been supporting the "restore Glen Canyon" for years... Many of the outfits in Moab sport the stickers on their boats, etc. IMHO they never take a minute to think about the impacts it would have on water needs down river, fish currently in the system, and what the canyon would look like if drained...

I think it would look awesome! I haven't done really any research on this, but I would bet that we could all do with a smaller 'lake'. And damnit, LA can figure out how to make it's own power.

Did you see the canyon walls this last year before the water rose again? The rock is covered in nasty white scale.

that's alright, we'd just have whitish canyons. I like canyons a lot better than I like big-ass lakes.

just curious if you ahve been to powell before? I wouldn't call it a lake...I'd call it a river...I am willign to bet its narrower than most the large rivers in this country...

I would like to see it drained. I would like to see it never damed in the first place better. Does anyone wish they had damed the Grand Canyon? It was planned at one time.

Okay, everyone that is saying that they would like to see it drained, why? I honestly don't see a reason to do so. I have enjoyed boating on Lake Powell for my whole life and can't think of any reason to drain it. The dam supplies power to a lot of states around, provides a great recreation area for families and keeps Page alive (though, barely....that place seems to be a ghost town now.)

Anyway, what are your reasons? And if the powers that be do drain it, are you going to be out in that canyon picking up all of the trash and debri from the past 30 years of use??

Does anyone really have a clue as to what kind of economic impact such an act would have on the WHOLE COUNTRY, not just So Cal? With out So Cal there is pretty much no America as we know of it today.

Sad as it may be, that is the reality of it. I personally dont think it will ever happen.

Do ANY of the extremist EVER think about what their actions might do? I rest my case.... :D

Have you BEEN to So Cal lately? That might not be a bad trade! :D

But seriously, the wackos in California (and New York) cause most of the stupid laws and trends the rest of the US has to deal with on a daily basis. California is doing it, it must be right!

Perhaps they should propose closing down the coal-fired power plant West of us here in the SL valley...I am sure that causes more overall impact than building a dam, yet equally as essential to our daily lives.

Don't get 'em thinking..Or they will hide one or the other in a new proposition and make it pass...
