The phones these days are addictive. I spend more time fooling with my phone and finding ways to make it better. I'm currently running a beta version of WM6.5 that then on top of that I'm running a UI that is from another phone that is newer. For the last day or so I have been playing with the UI files to figure out how to mod it.

As for jail breaking the G1

1. Power off your phone.
2. Start up in recovery mode by holding home and pressing power.
3. You will now enter recovery mode. You should see an exclamation.
4. If you do not see a menu on screen, press Alt-L to show the menu.
5. Press Alt-S to apply the update from the SD card.
6. After the update is complete, hold Home and press Back to restart.

One of the best modding sites I have found, XDA Developers

BFTD...

My wife just upgraded to a Droid 2, with car charger, hard cover, the fivespot hotspot device, and no activation fees all for $150. We haven't had internet at our place for just over a year so we figured that we'd do the fivespot. Verizon included 3GB's of usage per month (their normal plan is 250MB & Business plan is 5GB), which I'm sure will be plenty with the relatively light web surfing that we do. $30 per month is locked in for the two years too, which they say the 3GB offer is in a trial period for another month then dissapears; only to come back if Verizon felt it was sought after by consumers. Rockymonkey could either debunk/verify this I'm sure. Either way 3GB kicks 250MB ass for the same price any day.

She's loving the new phone, and we haven't even tried out the fivespot yet.

The 3 gig plan is supposedly a "limited time offer", but those tend to get permanent eventually. FWIW, I switched my MiFi to that plan too. You can watch your usage on Verizonwireless.com, and change your plan if you need to.

I'll be upgrading my MiFi to a 4G device sometime next year when LTE reaches Salt Lake.

FWIW, I'm over my smart phone, and looking to down grade :D

This is where we found ourselves.

We had basic phones (not even paying the $10 data on em) and still were about $90 a month. just for the 700 min with a little txt on it.
Now days, the only phones that don't require data with the big V are shitty and if I am gunna have a shitty phone I am not spending that much a month.

Recently just went to tracphones new plan. 60 bucks for 2 phones. Each has 1000 min. and 1000 msg, and 30mgb data.

We never used our phones much and just got sick of the bill. Saving 30 bucks each month helps as well.

Not saying it's the right choice for all, but for us, we just aren't power users.

The ten dollar data requirement is gone now! Technically the whole multimedia phone segment still requires it, but the segment has been eliminated going forward. The only new phones that require a data plan are the smartphones. :)

and there are no simple feature phones that will play music and txt at the same time. ;)

I always had data blocked on my account, so to make my wife pay 10-15 bucks extra just to have a nice chocolate touch is just plain crap. And it If want a nice Env3 so I can txt and listen to music at the same time...sorry....just fork over the extra data charge.......Got old.

Not that I wanna beat down the big V too hard. If They hadn't put me out on Disability I would still be there. There is no better data network and the phones are second to none. I wouldn't hesitate for a second to recommend them to someone that needs a data phone for their needs. They just don't have a product for my needs right now in my life.

I think it's a Verizon thing... they try to squeeze every penny out of you. They try to charge the same thing with their Blackberries, but you can bypass that I guess.

wha? PDA net. I've use my motorola droid tethered for almost a year..

also. I kinda want to step back down to a gzone rock or something unbreakable... I could break a steel ball in a rubber room

I have my phone so I can use it as a wi-fi hotspot for free. I found out how on www.androidforums.com. Way better than paying 30 bucks on something that you should get for free anyway.

The update I got last weekend on my G2 does exactly that, for free. :D

also, current speech to text utility is AWESOME. I had a beta of something-or-other a while back but the current crop is WAY more accurate...

anyway
