Does anybody have a dual battery set up in their xj? If so, how did you set it up? Does anybody carry dual battery trays for xj's? Thanks in advance for any help.

Not in an XJ, but in my FJ...

I used the Wrangler NW switching setup... lots more $$$ than a simple "boat" switch, but well worth the money. With it, I can switch from single to dual charge, to dual run right off my dash... So as I am cruising down the trail, I can charge both, and then switch back to one.. if the winch needs some extra juice (it is wired to bat #2) then I can dual them up, likewise if my start battery goes dead (leave lights on, etc)... jump off of them both...

the challenge is finding room to mount two under the hood, some folks who have removed the airbox have found a left hand drive battery tray (export item) for the second battery.

Is it possible to mount the batteries in two different locations (under the hood)? Are their cables long enough to do something like that?

Yup, and Yup... many OEM applications (Chevy trucks) had the batteries on two different spots.. if you can't find the exact cable, make your own, you can buy the engs and crip them on your own cable... All my cables are HD with crimped/soldered ends, looks super clean and will never fail.

I'll try and take a pic of my setup this afternoon.

hmmm... what is necessary to move batteries into the back? i would like to relocate mine to the rear to get some weight back there. everything helps!

so do i have to buy some expensive extended cables or can i make some or have some made? they will have to be pretty long. i wonder how much my battery weighs...

Here is a kit that summit sells. Gives you an idea http://store.summitracing.com/product.asp?p=2087&searchtype=ecat. you should concider having it inside a protective case as well.

hmm... wouldn't 3ft be a little bit short for me to move the battery all the way to the back? and 40 bucks seems steep. perhaps someone else sells battery cable by itself and i could save money by not getting the other crap it comes with.
anyone?

It comes with a 16' length for the positive lead to get you from the front of the vehicle to the rear battery. It comes with a second 3' length to go from the battery to a grounding point (like the frame). I have not priced 1-guage wire lately, but I bet that 19' of it will come close to $40. That is not a bad deal, but you may be able to build your own locally for cheaper. That just gives you an idea of what you may need.
