Time to upsize from the 4Runner. (3 car seats don't fit real well) Looking at getting an fj80 but don't know a whole lot about them. From selling the 4Runner I'll have enough $$ to get an early 90's (92-93)
If you have any recommends on what to look for please let me know.
Are they all the straight 6? Does that mean they have a Timing Chain instead of a belt? All I'm finding are real high miles fj's (240k) and the like, I know nothing about that motor. I do all my own work so I'll learn anyway.
Any help or advice would be great!
Thanks
Caleb

The 3FE in the FJ80 doesn't run a timing chain or belt, its a gear driven cam. The 1FZ-FE in the FZJ80 is in face a timing chain configuration.

Slee's site is a great starting point for sure. The best thing is going to start looking at some in person and get a grip for what your budget will set you up with. Good luck!

After owning a '92 FJ80, I would highly recommend that you hold out for a '93+, as the 3FE and Auto make for a pathetically slow vehicle. The 4.5l in the newer FZJ's is a huge improvement over the 4.0 3FE and driveability, especially on the highway/freeway is greatly improved. Expect to get about 11 MPG, no matter what you do, with either vehicle.

They're solid rigs, just take your time finding one that fits your budget and desires, they can be had for cheap in this economy.

I upgraded from my '92 FJ80 to a '97 FZJ80 and I love the FZJ, it's much easier to enjoy and although they are very similar, they're also very different.

200k miles seems to be about average, most of the engines if taken care of, will easily exceed 300k+ without major trouble, but you have to remember that the rest of the drivetrain and body also have huge miles on them. The FZJ's to tend to have head gasket issues around 200k, so keep that in mind.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask! Good luck on the vehicle hunt!

look in colorado on craigslist. they are more abundant and cheaper there. if you haven't used it try http://www.themccumbers.com/States.htm it is a great cragislist search utility.

when i bought mine there was a ton to choose from. good luck finding one and they are nice, but the fuel mileage does suck.

Thanks for all the input and help. I Think I'll keep the runner for now and save my pennies for a mid 90's with fewer miles. I found a website called littleseats.com and they sell a 3rd row for 4runners, I might give that a go for now.
Slee's site is super informative -thanks" and that Themccumber site is great!
Thanks Greg for the info on the years. I went and drove a 92 and it was pretty gutless.
