EGT probe locations

The egt probe is mounted just before my catlatic converter and right next to the oil pan on my 95 Grand cherokee. I see high temps (1200@65-70 mph)(1300-1600 up hill and higher speeds) with that guage all the time and it has had me worried but I am now thinking that the probe picks up heat from tranny oil pan is this possible? Whats the ideal location for the probe? Would some header tape around the probe help get a more accurate reading?

I would think that it's picking up more heat from the cat than anything else. Catalytic converters are designed to heat up hotter than exhaust gas to burn off any extra pollutants.

How close is it mounted to the cat?

The cat is heating up pretty good, I want to say 800 degrees. The manifold is always the best for engine temps because thats is the most realistic location for correct engine temps. Thats where I put the power strokes.

My mistake my memory failed me. The probe is mounted right next to the tranny pan in the y pipe that connects the headers to the exhaust. I still feel like that may not be the best location. What do you guys think?

The y pipe will give you a good average of both sides. If you want a more accurate reading of a single side, then move it closer to the manifold.

The exhaust temp is higher than the tranny temp, so i dont see that effecting it.
