I hate the thought of 16 thousand people trying to run a damned trail all at once. I will probably never go just for that reason!!

If you go the first weekend and the first part of the week, the crowd isn't really bad at all. Avoid the schedualed EJS trails on the certain days, and you will be good to go.

The crowd usually shows up near the end of the week on Thursday night and things get really messy on Friday through the rest of the last weekend. So if you want to go, make it the early part of the week.

I'll be wheelin the first part of the week, and then sticking around to see the vendor show on thursday.

I've been going down there for six+ years straight now. Never have I really had a hard time getting on the trail, and that includes the busy weekend. I have camped, stayed in hotels, and now we just have a house we stay at in town... never a major complaint out of me.

Ways to enjoy EJS.... :D

1. Get up early... the Safari isn't hitting the trails til' 9-10am.

2. Stay the f*** away from Hells Revenge, Dump Bump and PSH if you are a crowd hater...;)

3. Plan out your trails using the EJS guide... go where they are not...

4. Wheel in the morning... vendor show in the afternoon, Party at night... :D

But if your a crowd hater...don't go... your loss :D

I love the EJS. Ive been going for 11 year since I was a kid, and I just love the atmosphere. Good people, great trails. The biggest complaint that I have about EJS week is all the people who are running the trails that are not on the sanctioned runs. They clog up the works, argue with the trail leaders, yell at the participants (thisi isn't all of them, but a goodly number).
The EJS is a good 'social' event. If you like meeting people and having a good time, go to the Safari. If all you want to do is run the trail and get the hell out, then dont go. Its not worth it to deal with the large number of people.
But all I can say is I went down three years ago and only ran 3 sanctioned trails and then just went out with other people the rest of the week. And I was bored out of my mind! I wish I had had sanctioned runs every day, It would have been much more entertaining.

I like to go to MOAB for the trails. I like to run my trails and not have to wait for others.

I have heard about problems with non-sanctioned riders butting heads with sanctioned riders. That seems to be an issue lately. I wish they would break it up into multiple events during the year but I don't think the BLM is up for that kind of invited impact on the land.

I am just not a gigantic crowd guy. We had about 15 rigs running behind the rocks. we had a full range of setups and it was fun at times and slow at others but it was fun!! that is about as big of a group as I could handle....

again I have never gone so I don't have first hand experience. that is what this thread is for....

the only time that I have been mad and frustrated on the trail was two years ago on big Saturday and that was just because I didnt think and headed up PSM on big saturdayit took about 4 hour to get to the top and there was about 500 rigs up there, So i just register with the redrock trail runs on saturday so that we have the trail to our selfs basicly and it helps support redrock with the money.

I thought that we had almost too many people....was talking too long to do that trail. Everyone had to try and do the obstacles. Oh well though, smaller is better!! :D

that brings up another issue....where does all the money go and what does it do....I don't mind someone makin a buck as long as they are perfectly honest about it.....

The money goes to pay the BLM for the permits to run the trails that week. And to help the fight to keep the trails open. I personaly like EJS I like watching the other people on the trail. We did behind the rocks 2 years ago on big Saturday, and we waited at high dive for abot 2 1/2 hours before we were able to to try it. And It did mind one bit.

If you don't like the crowds and big groups on the trail then stay away or run a different trail that the red rocks guys aren't running that day.

Another cool thing about it is you can go out to upper and lower Helldarado on any day during the week and watch guys go up them. or go up to the proving grounds and watch.

The Red Rock 4-Wheelers put on the EJS. The Money goes to pay for BLM permits, which have to be renewed every 5 years, and each year it gets more expensive. It also pays for renting out the Spanish Trail Arena and for the Vendor show. Also, some of the funds go towards fighting Enviros and lawsuits.

Ive been going for 11 years and have never had a bad time. All you have to do is get on the trails early and off early toget a place to eat, the food is the best part down there.:D

If anyone wants to hook up we will be down there the night of the 17 and coming home the 21. We are staying at the moab valley inn.

I have mixed feelings I went every year for ten years starting in 87. I had great times and met a lot of nice people. I now feel like the event has become way way to large and is putting the future of four wheeling in Moab at risk. It seems like the Red Rockers have become so addicted to the revinue that they bring in that they will not even think about limiting the number of participants. No body that has been there in the past five years can deny that serious impact is being seen on the trails. 50+people on a trail ride is just to many and no fun. 5000+ 4X4s in the area is too many and leads to environmental problems and future closures. I would hate to see the event die but if the size of the event can not be limited I hope the BLM does not renew the permit next time. I know that organizers do a very good job during the organized trails of limiting impact and most of the trouble comes from the unregistered wheelers but somthing needs to give.

The only bad thing I can see is it is held the same time as "spring break" From what I understand next year EJS will be held the weekend BEFORE Easter instead the weekend of. Not to give college kids a bad rap but alot of the problems are associated with them.
ex.... The 4Runner on Lion's Back last year. I feel both parties were at fault but again it was a "spring breaker" that ended rubber side up:(
I have partied in my days and I still do however there is a time and a place for it. On the trail is NOT the place.

This will be my second year for EJS. I agree with a couple of comments that say it is a social event. I do sign up for the organized trail runs, and it is a great place to meet some new people. Watching everyone run the obstacles is a great time, and hanging around and socializing is really fun.

Every other time I go to Moab is when I want to just run the trials. I went to moab 6 times last year (maybe more), There is plenty of opportunity to run the trails of your choosing every other weekend of the year, so EJS is just for fun and socializing.
