All the electric motor has to do is apply plenty of torque and be able to maintain it to get the load moving.
Early unimogs of a model similar to mine, but shorter wheelbase, were pretty commonly used as rail switcher engines or fighter plane tugs where the double cab was used for the fighter pilots to stay warm. In that config, they had a huge torque converter in front of an eight or twenty speed manual tranny. Push the clutch in and select your desired gear, select forward or reverse, and then use the big torque converter to get the whole thing moving.
