Please help. I have an engine noise that I am not sure what it is. My jeep is a 92 YJ with the I6 that runs pretty well. It has an aftermarket Banks exhaust system and a throttle body spacer on the engine. But other than that, the engine is stock. Please click on the link to listen to the noise and please guide me what it is. I am not sure if this is a knock, a ping or an Eagles band rhythm.

Once there, click on the little icon that looks like a music note. It is in .wav format so Windows should detect it pretty easily.

Thanks

Sounds like something from the top end to me. I would pull the valve cover and check things out. make sure that all the nuts on the rocker arms are tight and that sort of thing.

Sticky lifter? Sounds like it to me.

You can use a big pry bar as a stethoscope and isolate where the noise is coming from. Put the metal on the top-end or block, then use the other end to listen with.

knock sound

It sounds like the flywheel bolts have come loose.
I had this happen on my sons XJ. I tightened them up and the noise went away
I took the inspection plate off to get to them. It took about and hour.

My son's harmonic balancer lost some of the rubber inside and allowed the outer metal part to mover towards the radiator which in turn started making contact with the fan blade and was making this exact sound...

Pull the shroud from around the fan and look to see if the fan is hitting the pulley that is on the bottom (crankshaft pulley)...
