two questions...I'm thinking about swapping out the engine in my 97 GMC 1/2 ton. I'm seeing alot of crate engines with vortec heads that are set up for carbs. Will these work as a direct swap with my EFI and still pass IM standards? And I've seen them all being listed (vortec and HIPO engines) as using a 86-00 block. I have a engine out of a 93 in the garage, could I have it rebuilt with vortec heads and drop it in or will I have problems?

the 93 bottom end will work just fine, to use a vortec setup you will need the vortec heads and intake manifold.

dont know if the tbi setup will bolt down to the carb manifold but i believe that you would need a 2 barrel carb adapter to use the tbi assembly.

There are several companies selling TBI adapter plates. Trans-Dapt is one that comes to mind and I think Jegs and Summit sell a couple of different brands/styles. I'd heard it's better to use the TBI manifold designed for Vortec heads from GM Performance Parts because it is better at atomizing fuel than a regular Vortec intake. Supposedly with TBI adapted to a regular Vortec manifold, the fuel tends to pool up in the manifold, but I have no idea if this claim is true.

I've been looking at doing something like what you're investigating. I have a TBI engine that needs to be rebuilt and I'm looking at options and all that right now.

wait, are you talkng about using the intake that's on the '93 or using the intake that's currently on your '97? What engine is your '97?

You caught on:D I don't need the TBI my 97 is a Vortec So I would be using the MPFI off of it I'd only being using the block off the 93. This is starting to sound alot better and Cheaper
