Exciting morning

I was coming home from work this morning. As I pulled into my neighborhood, I noticed a white Camaro flying up to pass me. Now, I'm in my neighborhood now, just small side streets with houses on both sides, 25MPH speed limit. He goes by me and gets the obligatory one-finger salute from yours truly. I decide to follow him to wherever he's going and have a word with him. We tend to have a lot of teenagers who don't think speed limits apply to them. I do my share of speeding to, but when it comes to small side streets with chidren present, that's where I draw the line. Especially dumb-ass moves such as passing other vehicles recklessly.

As I start following him, I notice a full size pickup on my ass. He also passes me in a very reckless manner. Now I know that something is up. It may be a case of road-rage, I really didn't care, these a-holes were going to slow down through my neighborhood!

So I'm watching where they are both headed, and the Camaro turns up a road that winds back around to my house, with no other way to go. I head to my house with the intention of heading these guys off. Well, as I pull into my driveway, this Camaro comes flying, like 50+ mph around the corner a half block from my house. I throw my truck into reverse, and attempt to block his route, he goes behind me, but loses control on the wet pavement. He does several fishtails before coming to a stop completely sideways 2 doors down from me. I jump out of the truck and start over that way and the truck that's chasing him pulls up and stops. The guy is yelling at me to jump back in my truck and help box him in. I asked what's going on, and he tells me that the guy had just stolen a bunch on computer equipment from him.

I jump back in my truck, and once again follow both vehicles. The guy in the Camaro takes another wrong turn and goes up a street that only has one way out. The pickup follows him, so I go to the street that they are going to exit on. I turn onto the street, and here comes the Camaro. I try to block as much of the road as possible with my Toyota, but he's not stopping. He goes between me and the curb, maybe even up on the curb, not sure. As he goes by, he clips my front fender with his rear driver quarter-panel, and keeps on going. Smashed my fender, bumper, and park light. The other truck goes behind me and they take off out of the neighborhood.

I follow them for a ways, but these guys are blowing through red lights and stop signs, so I just pull over and call 911. The guy in the other truck must have been on the line with them, because they already had the discription of the vehicles. They told me to stay put and an officer was on the way. It was only 2-3 minutes before 4 cops cars blew me with sirens going. The last one stopped and told me to fill out an accident report and return it to the PD, because he had to go help with apprehending this clown. They had him holed up at his home a few blocks away.

Maybe what I did was stupid, I don't know. I did what I felt had to be done. Now I have to figure out how to get my truck paid for, as the guy doesn't have any insurance. At least they got him.

Sounds like a wild morning...
As for getting the truck fixed, My wife was rear-ended by a guy that claimed to have insurance but really didn't we ended up going through our insurance and we had to pay our deductible and then they went after the guy for the money. Once the guy paid the insurance company we got our deductible back. (no-fault insurance?) I guess the insurance company even tracked him down in Florida after he moved there.

One side of me says good job!

The other side of me however questions why a person would risk their lives for some computer equipment, or even just for a speeder.

I am a police officer, so I put myself at risk for other people and their property, but only after I have taken as many precautions as possible to insure my safety. I have a handgun with over 40 rounds available, a long gun with 60 rounds available, a bullet proof vest, a radio with instant communication, and multiple officers available who know exactly where I am at.

Sometimes the best thing you can do is be a good witness. You never know what the other person's mindset or mental condition is. The person in the camaro may have just escaped death row and would kill any and everything in his way to avoid capture.

Dang, I sound like an old fuddy duddy.

Personally if it was me, I would of had my PPK hanging out the drivers side window and I would've been capping rounds off at the SOB. My motto is shoot the scumbags first, then sort out what family member comes and gets them.

I agree with you V-Dawg. To be honest with you, when this whole thing started, I was just after a license plate number. Things happen faster than you think sometimes. Do I regret it? Maybe. Maybe not. But you can bet your a$$ I'll be happy to be a witness to put this POS away if I get the chance.

Surprisingly, I didn't get a butt-chewing of any kind from any of the officers...

Too bad you didn't have a gun when the scumbag tried to kill you with his car. Aggravated assault is a Felony, but you could have saved us some taxpayer $$. He'll be out in a week, maybe robbing, raping, child molesting.. who knows what. (If he put my kids in danger like that, I'd have shot him dead given the chance.) Good job anyhow.

Umm, if you were in that exact situation and tried to shoot him, you'd be in the wrong. You put yourself in harm's way. It's similar to if you started a fight, threw the first fist, then pulled a gun when the other person tried to fight back. Although I think we all agree this guy needs to be removed from existence, you'd be in major legal trouble if you jumped in, guns blazing.

Coreshot, while I applaud your bravery and would give you a pat on the back, you could've been seriously hurt or killed. Glad you made it through and the bad guy got caught, but if it were me, I would've been a bystander/good witness rather than involving myself the way you did. Too much personal risk for me.
