Exhaust wrap?

I have a chevy 4.3 with headman hedders that are rusting. I have read about headder wrap and is supposed to reduce hood temp but as much as 70%.

What I am wondering is has anybody used it and was it sucessful or not and does anybody sell it locally that I can walk in and but it or do I order from summit?

I have never used this stuff personally, but I know people who have and they have complained of rust as a result of the wrap, saying that it retains moisture against the metal when they are cold. I've also heard that they can retain so much heat that it can cause the steel tubes and/or flanges to warp. Again, I just heard it second hand. As far as reducing under hood temps...I'm sure it does that too.

Yep I have used it on a couple of street cars, never had the pipe or flange distort but when we unwrapped the headers they basically came apart with the wrap. they make a silicone spray that helps I have heard but have never used it myself

I've used similar stuff on an exhaust pipe that ended up really close to my foot. (buggy) It worked wonders on keeping burns away from my skin.

I dont think . that it will help with rust. I dont know who has this locally but im sure someone does. A muffler co for sure

yep, I used it on the exhaust in my buggy, the part that ran under the floor boards...worked great to keep the heat down. I have also heard the same thing about causing rust, it will definitely hold moisture against the tubing, I wouldn't use it on headers for that reason.

its ok, i have them on my headers, it work and they are touchable after you shut it down, so it does work, im not sure about 70% cooler. some cars im sure it up to 70% me maybe 30-40% kooler

you can always send your headers out for ceramic coating which will help both the rust and heat issues

Dido. Thats what my dad did on all his race cars. They didn't rust they weren't cool to the touch right after but they weren't too hot either. They run cooler than non coated headers.

I had the headers on my 5.9L ZJ Jet Hot coated and it held up great. Never flaked or rusted but did discolor a bit after a few years.

How old are your headers, and what type of abuse have they seen??? Most sets that I have had usually start to "breakdown" after 2-3 years. I have noticed that when your in a less humid climate, the rust problem is not an issue. Up here on friends cars they have to replace their headers more often then say in vegas.

Header Wrap is wonderfull to lower exaust temps and a slight increase in HP because the hotter you can keep your exaust, the faster it wants to get out of the tail pipe. The only thing is that it works like a towel, it will retain water.
So Ceramic coating might be worth the extra money, but it also depends on your budget.

i have a neigbor has a 350 in his FJ, and has the headers wrapped, and it is a world of difference for him, he hasnt removed the wrap to see if there is any damage, but then again why would he, but he does agree that the wrap helps a TON....

Where do you live? Ive got 2 rolls of the black DEI stuff i was going to use for my Mustang, but probably wont now.

I carry DEI and Thermo Tec in stock and the stuff works. Yes it can trap moisture and cause rapid rusting, but if you paint the headers with a couple thick coats FIRST it will help a great deal.
