Expedition as a full size crawler?

My brother has a set of axles burning a hole in his pocket and just picked up a 99 expedition and wants to make it into a street legal crawler. Just wondering if anyone had opinions about making one of these since I can't recall having ever seen one and am not sure if they have a frame or subframe. I am curious because I will probably being doing most the work on it.

I'm pretty sure they have a real frame. All I can say is aluminum can!! The good news is that it will get smaller as you wheel it

You know, I was gonna start a thread somewhere on this the other day.

you don't see Pathfinders, Expeditions, or Durangos.

Why?

Lots of other IFS rigs, both with and without SAS conversions.

Tahoes, Suburbans, scouts, Bronco's, Ramchargers, Traildusters etc. are all accepted SAS rigs, IFS crawlers,

So why not the others?

318's are good drivetrains
Nissan 3.0 seems okay
Ford's 4.6 is tite

What gives?

The krawling virgin

I almost edited when I realized that was a potential assumption.

I just lumped them in with the others that were, Tahoe, Suburban, and 4 runner.
as in: "you see all these other rigs IFS or not IFS rigs, krawlin the rocks, hell some sick b-tards take FORD parts, ken ya believe that ?, and put under the chevy to make the chevy straight axle like they used to be back when they was worth a tinkers damn, but you never see the ...."

expedition...

I have a 98 expedition that I have built up somewhat... I have 4.56 axles and a limited slip in the rear with a 4 inch lift and 35 in tires on it... on the front I have a 12,000 lb ramsey winch and I have taken it up and down some pretty ruff trails... I have dented running boards from going down rose garden hill before I lifted it (see picture)... It also has many Happy scratches from tree branches and such from trails that were too small for it to make but I made it anyway!

Ron out in Tooele can vouch for me taking it down one of colorados back country trails that some said I would never make...

The downside to the expeditions as a rock crawler is that the departure angle is pretty small due to the over hang. and with my winch onthe front my approach angle isn't that great either but then again the bottom of the winch mount is sitting about 36 ins off the ground. Otherwise its a pretty stable rig but could really use a solid axle up front instead of the ifs...

Personally I think there are a lot of SAS vehicles out there that should probably have stayed IFS. I have seen a LOT of vehicles that are swapped, but still have stock diff gears, no T-case gears, or Lockers, 4+" blocks (sometimes stacked), no rock rails/bumpers, scarry home made steering, and hardly even offroad capable.

If he plans on making a true "rock crawler" than by all means do it (and post pics!), but swapping an axle just to say you did seems like a LOT of uneeded work.

Gonna have to sit pretty high to clear the front pumkin. The F-150/expeditions have almost no arch on the front frame extensions.

Go for it but, carry hefty bags for the broken glass when you wheel it.

buy the hurst jeep, use the expedition for a tow vechicle

He already has a powerstoke with 3 car hauler, a cummins with 3 car hauler and a semi with 9 car trailer, so he doesn't need a tow rig and the hurst jeep would be cool but got the expedition for dirt cheap and wants something to take the family wheelin in although he has no family.

thanks for the info- he plans on getting it set up about like yours but it is getting a solid axle up front for sure.

I believe that year of Expedition also has a 8.8 in the rear. Granted it has the bigger wheal bearings, but it's still an 8.8. I'm pretty big on 8.8's, but I don't think so in this application. This is the same 8.8 I use for my TJ swaps. Around 2000.5 they switched to 10.25's.

If you are big on them then I will have one for ya cause its getting a 60 or a 70 he hasn't decided which one is going in it.

:D Their perfect... Take some Bronco 9" axles and 9" wheel bearings, eliminate the C clips, and be 60" WMS - Just like the TJ's! :D
