Expedition Utah Freeze Your Tail Off 3

Expedition Utah December Summit & Overnighter

What: Expedition Utah would like to invite you to join us for our December Summit - "Freeze Your Tail Off 3" Overnighter.

Back again for 2011 is our annual 'Freeze Your Tail Off Overnighter'. Its become one of our more popular runs each year and we expect it to be no different this year.

When: Friday, December 16th and Saturday, December 17th. We'll be leaving SLC Friday (12/16) evening (meeting at Delle, UT along I-80 at 6:30pm for those that want to caravan from Delle to Lucin), camping at the Lucin Sun Tunnels that evening and then waking up early in the morning to watch the sunrise through the tunnels. It is several days off of the exact solstice but so long as we have clear skies it should make for some neat viewing. We will be returning home that evening (Saturday 12/17)

Where: For those arriving later in the evening, we'll be easy to spot at our camp site near the Tunnels. Following the Solstice celebrations Saturday morning we will travel back towards SLC in the dirt, with optional exit points for those that need to return home earlier. Potential stops include the Lucin ghost town, the Transcontinental Railroad system, the Hogup, Newfoundland and Lakeside Mountains, Spiral Jetty or the Silver Island Mountain range north of Wendover. Trail Difficulty: 3/10 though snow & mud can make some sections downright brutal.

Who: Anyone and everyone. Whether you're a seasoned traveler or someone just getting into exploring Utah's backcountry and varied historical sites we encourage you to come out. There is no group size limit for this event but please RSVP so we know who to expect.

CB Channel 20 & 2M 146.460. GPS Coordinate of Sun Tunnels: N 41.30 W 113.86.

Is anyone planning on going out later than 6:30? I have my daughter's dance recital I have to be at. I could leave SLC around 7:30.

A friend and I are planning on leaving SLC around 8 or 8:30 that night. I would love to meet up and go together if that timing works for you.

That would work great. It would give me some additional time to get home and be ready to go. Do you want to plan on meeting somewhere specific?

they are landscape art. The artist set them up to have cool stuff happen at cool times of the year. This time of year I think they have light shine through them I think. That is a guess though. I guess I should have googled it and pretended to know.

An artwork by Nancy Holt, completed in 1976, consisting of four large concrete tubes, laid out in the desert in an open X configuration. The nine foot diameter, 18 foot long "tunnels" are pierced by holes of varying size, that correspond with the pattern of selected celestial constellations. There is a tunnel for Draco, Perseus, Columba and Capricorn. http://ludb.clui.org/ex/i/UT3126/

The sun rises in line with the tunnels at the Solstice's.

k thanks, I did google it, and found the info that you guys gave me, but thought that there might be something more to it that may interest the wife a little more haha. She'll say something to the effect of, "soooo, the sunlight shines through some big concrete sewer tubes in the freezing desert? Sounds greeeeaaat..." She has a phobia of cold camping or something haha. I'm still going to try and make it, whether she comes or not...

If I may add, the Lucin Sun Tunnels are one of those places that don't really make sense until you get there and for some they may never make sense and that's just the way things are. There, resting in the middle of nowhere is these 4 giant cement tubes that attract a few thousand people per year. Its desolate, its lonely, its cold and its what I like to do on the weekends :D

Then again, my idea of a great Wednesday night is driving the backstreets of Eureka until 3am and then ringing the church bell on the way out of town :D

That would be me :D. I've never bothered stopping to look at them, but have driven by a few times. Until someone told me what they were, I thought it was just typical west desert garbage either left behind or illegally dumped. Even after I knew what I was looking at though, it's still just sewer pipe laying there that I see. Frankly, I think the place would look better if they were hauled away and disposed of properly :D.

I finally talked my wife into going last year and now she is hooked. There's definitely more to it than just the tunnels. Talk her into it! Lindz would love another chick to hang out with :D

I don't have anything specific yet... We will be near 80th south for a company Christmas BBQ I'm open to anything. Sportsmans Warehouse might be easy to pop onto the freeway from. Or we could meet up further north. You going to the WC Christmas party?
