I ended up stopping by Jack Kesler Customs today and had my camera with me. So the field trip started there :)

I had not met Jack or been to his store before today, but I am glad I took the time to stop by. I found out that he is next to Frank's Auto & Diesel in Midvale. I have driven by there many time, but never put A and B together.

This was on the far side of the building. So if you see this you are at the right place, but this is the company that was formally in this building.

Good looking Furd.... :p

Once you get past the office there is the room where they prep for paint and them move cars into the paint booth. I just missed one comming out, but these guys have lots of up and comming paint jobs. Here is just a few shots of the paint booth..

The next room over is where all the dirty works happens and the sparks fly. There were 3 or 4 employees busy working on cars that were nice enough to let me stop them for some photos of the current work happening

The big daddy frame rack to pull frames straight. I don't think I have ever owned a Jeep that could not use a little time on a frame rack
frameRack01.jpg

Little car hit on the side, they had all the pieces off so they could get down to nothing but sheet metal and paint
collision01.jpg

Entire rear panel was replaced. Add a little paint and this will look as good as new
collision02.jpg

This is a second little silver car, just showing a few phases of the work
collision03.jpg

And an idea of how much area had to be worked on
collision04.jpg

Had some major front end damage, but another day or two with Jack and his crew and this will look new again.
collision05.jpg

Jack I saw this laying in the backyard. Did this get cut out of the truck bed that I have a photo of above?

There was one more truck that I took photos of but Jack had to leave to attend to some phone calls. So I did not get all the details on this. Jack tell us more about it would ya? But the part I did get was that this truck came to them like this. It looks really good in photos, and really good from a-far, but when you get close and look it is kind of a shame. The lines don't look right, the paint looks thick but is chipping and scratching (this is right from the other body shop). And the the owner wants it done right to he took it to Jack Kesler shop.

So when they get some time they are going to start digging into this project. I want to see a progress report on this as they work though it all. It has some cool potential :D

While Jack was still taking care of business I wandered to the backyard to see what was back there....

Jacks other crawler. It is obvious he is not too worried about a little scratch or dent.

I like the willys wagons. This one needs some attention.
backyard03.jpg

A CJ that had some work done to it, but now is waiting while the owner chooses which direction he wants to go with it. But the paint looked really good for an old jeep

So today I learned that Jack's business is collision repair and some custom work. But just like you and me his hobby and his excitment of the day comes from working on his crawler. This thing is build to be used. And tonight (probalby as I type) he is cutting out the old booty fab suspension (that works really well) and updating it with some parts from Ben Hanks Racing. There will for sure be an update on this later. But he has just 2 days, in a Monster Garage style to cut out the old and install the new. I am excited to see how this works out.

I stopped by a few hours after those first photos were taken to see how the new suspension was comming along.

Ben Hanks helped to put together this kit to make the rear suspension set up really easy

Again another amazing truss made by Ben Hanks Racing

By 7:00 PM Jack, and a few others from RME had the axle removed, and were busy cutting the old brackets and suspension apart. Remember this project started late Monday night and he wants to take it to Moab on Thursday morning. I think it will be a late night :D

It was a late night, about 1:00 am. But a few buddies and a couple of beers later we actually got the entire set up tacked in. I need to run over to BHR and pick up some new heims, the ones I had laying around look a little ragged, so we are going to put in new. We have now pulled the cage to be painted today and re-installed tomarrow. I have power, leather, heated seats from a Liberty to re mount with the new (to me) cage who's builder is unknown, but was aquired in the same fashion as most of my other jeep parts, With no budget and below the wife's radar.

As for the yellow truck, it is a 68 Chev Longbed (origionally), that has been in this guys family since it was new. He took it to a different shop and had the short bed put on, and paint job done with a single stage yellow. He had it picked up from them and delivered to me on a tow truck. The frame was cut 6 inches too short, and the body was mounted back on to a bent frame, so none of the body parts, panels or doors lined up. I took it with the understanding that we will salvage as much as we can, and fix everything neccessary. I am letting him round up as many parts as he can get, as we need to finish everything from the brakes and drivelines, to the interior and stereo system. Not to mention the frame repair, chopping the A pillars to re-replace them so the doors will close with the proper distance from the floor boards, and Stripping and repainting the exterior. I estimated we will be in this job 800 to 1200 man hours, (billed hourly by time and materials) so I am letting him shop for the best deal on parts. When we get rolling, anything we need will have to be ordered and used, and billed reguardless of the cost. Most likely the bill for this truck completed will be in the $70,000-$90,000 range. And that's not including the big block he has already had built and mounted in it that is expected to produce 605hp.

The red C-J belongs to a customer of the previous owner of this shop and I put it out back until someone pays up to the point it is done. We did a frame off on that one, and 2 stage Ford Red E4(alternate). It is ready to be wired and plumbed, but has a $$$ balance on it that either needs to be paid by the customer or previous owner. (I don't care which.) Hopefully they will figure it out before the storage bill exceeds the value of the vehicle. We actually just pulled the tarp off the other day to stack parts in the tub and get them out of the shop.

That Misc. Panel out back is off of the Tundra, which got into the paint shop this morning, will be painted today, reassembled, detailed and delivered tomarrow.

The silver Kia hatchback was a front end hit, had to be setup and measured on the frame rack, but sustained no framerail or unibody damage. Simply a new radiatior support. It also is in the paint shop this morning, and will see r/a, detail and delivery tomarrow.

The silver Subaru requires a new door shell, which will be delivered tomarrow morning, preppedand jambed in, and sent back to the body shop for assembly and installation, then back to the paint shop for the exterior paint.

All of our collision jobs carry a lifetime warranty for the paint and body work. All of them are repaired, and completely dry fitted before they see the paint shop, which insures that the finished product is factory specs. The yellow truck is a good example of a lack of attention to detail, which results in a bad end product. It's easy to make a good job look bad, but it's really hard to make a bad job look good.

I will post some progress pics shortly, and by the way, the jeep needs to be loaded on the trailer by 5:00 pm tomarrow. I think we can do it, after all, we did build that whole jeep body, paint it and do the 3 link for the rear in 9 days before EJS this year.

We got the brackets cut out, and the axle removed, cleaned off most of the old welds, and started mounting the Ben Hanks Racing truss and Brackets.

This kit is awesome. Once you have all of the old out of the way, the new is pre-fabbed and ready to go in. We have all kinds of previous home-fab-ulous stuff underneath there, not to mention the generous lube for removing old bolts (courtesy of 10w-30 from 2.5L of unbridled fury) and these new links can be mounted with no drama at all. We are not fabricators. You want the sheet metal reshaped, and a custom flame job, we are your guys. BHR did an awesome job on this kit. Maybe Von could give more info about this.

By the time I went home, we had all 4 links tacked in place, with the exception of the 2 uppers on top of the truss. (I need to get the new heims for proper spacing before i weld them on.) I will have it all tacked, and cycle it through this afternoon, and then I'll give it to Paul, my Body shop manager, for the rest of the welding. (I can stick two peices of steel together, but I wouldn't wheel on my welds.)
