First aid kit shopping list.....

Im wanting to build some good 1st aid kits.

1 large well stocked kit to keep in my trailer and a few more for the RZR, Truck, Wifes car etc....
The big one can be as large as needed and the smaller ones need to fit into a 50cal ammo can at the largest.

Ive looked at several of the pre-made EMT kits on Ebay and Amazon and it seems like you could do better for less money, Even if the savings is just from not buying the special $100 bag and using a normal bag or back pack.

I spend enough time in the desert and dunes that if something happened it may be a while before real help is available.
I had a guy in camp last year get a bad cut and we basically had nothing. He ended up with paper towels and electrical tape.
The bleeding eventually stopped but what would have happened if it had been worse worries me a bit.

Ive seen several good wrecks at the dunes and even with EMT's not far out I would want more for myself or family than what I have seen most get for 1st aid.
Its pretty rare to even see anyone out there that carries any supplies at all.

Im not opposed to spending some money here but I want my moneys worth here.

I also posted on Pirate but thought someone here might know the best place to purchase the supplies locally.

Also, the pre made kits aren't real specific to what I ( or a lot of us ) do. Off road vehicles etc.. They also come with stuff I see no need for like a stethoscope, scalpels, oxygen, throat tubes etc....

I need a shopping list. If I crash the RZR hard and am bleeding and or broken I want to know I have the best chance possible at stopping the bleeding etc...

My girl has to certify at work yearly for 1st aid and I am planning on taking at least a basic coarse this winter for sure.

So whats everyone carrying ?

I always get, or set up an advanced first aid kit. It is a good idea to have more then you need or what you will use. Peoples, or your own, lifes my depend on it. My wires kit carries about three time mire stuff then mine. Stuff like scalpels sutures IV stuff, etc. But she does have her MD. Which by the way stands for mental deviate.

The pre-made packs are full of band-aids, and not much use full stuff. My wife has made some pretty sweet kits that we keep in our cars, and camper.
A must for me is burn gel.. I use it often :(
Our kits have, but are not limited too:
Burn gel,
Sting relief,
band-aids and anti biotic ointment
gauze and tape
scissors
tweezers
pain pills / allergy med
matches
butterfly bandaids
ace wrap
alcohol pads
rubber gloves

add hydrogen peroxide and some chest pads and you have mine... except I use to carry a army combat lifesaver bag that carried all that along with IV stuff but that all expired so I throw it out.

I have the throat hooks for if CPR is needed as well.

Don't use hydrogen peroxide. They don't use that in medicine anymore. If used they dilute it 50/50. It is to caustic and kills the good cells along with the bad. There are plenty of better cleansing agents.

Don't use hydrogen peroxide. They don't use that in medicine anymore.

H2O2 is used all the time in medicine still. Frequently used post-operatively for wounds prior to applying antibiotic ointment.

To get back on topic, I'd recommend a mask with a one way valve in case you have to give respirations during CPR.

My wife is a trauma doc. She said the only ones using hydrogen peroxide is some oral surgeons, and they only use it at a 50/50 mix. Plus stay away from Neosporin. If you can get basatracine (spelling). Not sure why, but I was told it is bad. Most good kits you get should have a mask with a one way valve.

My wife has been an EMT for years (now expired) and i have a wilderness first aid cert ( a class I highly recommend) For all our vehicles, we start with a kit that has basic bandaging and medicines, and then add to it stuff like this:
1- cohesive wrap 1" and 2" wide. This stuff is the best thing since duct tape!
2- lots of 4x4 and 2x2 sterile gauze packs
3- gloves in mine and wife's sizes
4- sting kill swabs and Benadryl
5- generic SAM splint
6- A few simple medicines not included in the kit, like immodium and pepto bismal.
7- A military Israeli bandage for bad bleeding.

Just like vehicle repair, the knowledge and some ingenuity with what you have is far more important than any supplies, although some basics are good to have.

I keep storage of all first aid items, so i buy in bulk. I have a little spreadsheet of the best case pricing I can find online. For local purchase in any qty, I recommend Stat Medical on 4894 S 300 W. I haven't really looked at their kits, but they have pretty good prices on supplies.

The 401 kits look nice but Im sure we can build the kits for less $$.

Even their kits have a ton of stuff inside them I don't need.

If in the desert I usually have my motorhome there and it has a pretty well stocked medicine cabinet with bandaids, medicine, burn gel, and other basics...

I don't think Id want anyone going through the 1st aid kit for an Ibuprofen anyway. If I grab the bag there better be a real problem we are dealing with. I think if the real basic stuff is in the kit it will get used and Ill forget to restock it anyway...

Id like to get 1 large kit built to have in my enclosed trailer with all the stuff I hope Ill never need.
Im going to build 3 more smaller kits for our vehicles and another to put on my RZR if something happens away from camp.

Kurt, are you a dealer for race401? Group buy?

I'm not, I've just purchased them direct or when they have been at off-road events. They are racers themselves and set out to design a kit that covered the motorsports injuries they had dealt with... I've been content with the kits contents.

I don't think Id want anyone going through the 1st aid kit for an Ibuprofen anyway.

I keep a small basic kit I put together in my riding backpack. I took stuff out that didnt apply to emergency field first aid like triple antibiotic because anything we do will be re cleaned and re dressed.

Thing I added are:
gloves
emergency candles
waterproof matches
lighter
granola bar
emergency blanket
glow stick
4 single use super glue tubes (field sutures)
Rain poncho
Compression pad
glow stick
tape
emergency water packet
a few 800 mg ibuprofen
a few lortab

You talk about not wanting ibuprofen but last year I was riding with a friend that broke his leg 15 miles in on some single track. I thought we where going to have to call for help to get him off the mountain but 20 min after I gave him some pain meds he was able to get on the bike any baby his way off the trail to where we could get a truck.

you can see it packs down small

I actually meant for the larger kit that will stay in the trailer is where I don't want any basic needs like Ibuprofen etc......
In the smaller kits I will include some of the small foil packs.

Ive been looking at prices online and this stuff is all pretty cheap.
Some of it comes in larger than I need quantity's but Ill just have extra, the antiseptic gel and Ibuprofen come like 144/ box etc... They are cheap enough though it wont matter.

Well I spent a bunch of money last night on the net.

I copied the contents of what I though was a pretty complete kit that cost $225 from race401..

I added quite a few things to the list and bought enough stuff to build one very well stocked as well as probably 6 or 7 smaller vehicle kits.

I found that it was actually cheaper to buy most of it by the box or case.
Things like the little burn gel packs were 144/$11 or .50=.65 each. I went ahead and added Ibuprofen , pepto tabs, aspirin, Benadryl etc...
I also added electrolyte tabs, water packs, foil blankets, granols bars , and chemlites for every kit.

Every kit will also have good tweezers and scissors.

The big kit has Sam Splints, Quickclot, CPR masks, and extras of everything in the smaller kits Im building.

When buying from medical supply stores it is all dirt cheap. It did add up pretty quick though.

It will most likely cost me around the same as buying pre made kits in the end but I feel Im getting a better setup. At the minimum Im getting exactly what I want though and Ill have a large kit and several kits for all my vehicles etc...

I still need to find some small bags to put these together with.
I have a backpack Im planning on using for the larger kit already.

Anyone got a line on small shaving kit size waterproof bags ?
