No iirc ford switched the 1-ton front end to the solid-axle D60 in 1997.

No IIRC ford used the D50 solid axle from 99-02 then made the switch to the D60 in the trucks

Oh, found the correction.

Mr.N's Dana Article said:
Picture 5x is of a 1994 Dana 60 axle. This axle ran from 1992 to 1998 and has the weaker ball joints holding the knuckles on. It runs the same axle shaft length as the 1985-91 style. In 2000 Ford started using a Dana 60 again but with a metric bolt pattern and a new style hub. This axle has it's own unique axle shaft length. You can not swap axle shaft between this 2000 and up style with a 98 and older style -this is per Dana.

So the Kingpin D60 was ran from 1977.5-1979, then 1980-1991 was the D50 "IFS", (also brought back the Kingpin D60 in '85-'92 under some 1-tons) and then 1992-1998 was a balljoint-style axle with the 8x6.5" bolt pattern, and then (i thought it was '99, but apparently in '00) they switched to the 8x165mm (iirc) bolt pattern.

Chocflip201 said:
Okay so we're both right kinda... The D50 was offered in the years in the quote (so the 350 quit using it in 86, but had it in the 250 and Excursion in '00) and the D60 was offered in the above years.

If you read the bible it show that only the DRW had the D60 ffrom 1999-02

Ford

1978-79 F-350 and some F-250 (Snofighter and High GVW packages)
1986-88 F-350 with dual rear wheels (DRW)

1988-91.5 F-350 with single rear wheels (SRW)

1992-95 F-350 (all) (balljoint)

1996.5-98 F-350 (all) (balljoint)

2000 F350/F450/F550 DRW (balljoint, metric 8x170mm wheel bolt pattern F350 / 8x220mm F450/F550, unit bearing hub)

2000.5 F350/F450/F550 DRW (balljoint, metric 8x170mm wheel bolt pattern F350 / 8x220mm F450/F550, unit bearing hub)

2001 F350 DRW (balljoint, metric 8x170mm wheel bolt pattern, unit bearing hub)

2001-02 F450/F550 DRW (balljoint, metric 8x220mm wheel bolt pattern, unit bearing hub)

2002 F250/F350 SRW (balljoint, metric 8x170mm wheel bolt pattern, unit bearing hub)

2002 F450/F550 DRW (balljoint, metric 8x220mm wheel bolt pattern, unit bearing hub)

All these Ford versions were drivers side differential, reverse-cut (high pinion) gears, and kingpin knuckles to 1991.5 and balljoints thereafter. Most Ford D60s are internal style hubs, but external type lockout versions do exist. 2000 and later Ford D60s have balljoints, a metric wheel lug pattern of 8x170mm up to F350 and 8x220mm for F450/F550, different brakes and spindles, sealed "unit-bearing hubs", hub-centric wheels, different length axleshafts from the earlier D60s, and larger Superduty specific tie rod ends. From 2000 on, the Ford D60 front axle is also known as the Model 60F2000+ or the 248M. 248 just happens to be the equivalent in millimeters of 9.75" - the diameter of the D60s ring gear.

So theres some info.

Dana 50 to 60 conversion

I bought a Dana 50 out of a 00 F350 after being assured it was a Dana 60. From what I've read the housing is the same so my question is, can you change out the carrier and axles and have a Dana 60 or are there other differences? I'm also wondering what a Dana 50 should sell for. I'm in negotiations with the guy that sold it to me to get some money back. Thanks for any help.

The housings are different.. depending on want you are doing you can use the 50 but the axle shafts are the real problem they taper down big time where they going into the side gears (carrier). I don't know if you can change the side gears an upgrade the shafts I was going to look into this but haven't played with it yet.

A Dana 60 carrier WILL NOT fit in a 50. :-(

hopefully you didn't pay more than $300- $400 for the axle.

I would try and get your money back you were told it was a 60 and it was not. the D-50 are only worth a couple hundred bucks at best and the D-60 out of newer SD are selling in junk yards for only around $500-$600

It sounds like you want a dana 60. Why settle for less? Get all your money back. If the guy made an honest mistake he should give you your money and come and get the axle, assuming you had to go get it from him.

Okay, lets keep this from happening again. Here is what I found searching. It is all stolen information, so double check it.

50 Vs 60

Dana 44 vs. Dana 50 vs. Dana 60
Ring gear diameter
44 8.5 inch
50 9 inch
60 9.75 inch
Pinion shaft diameter
44 1.375 inch
50 1.377 inch
60 1.625 inch

Dana 50, 60, 70 etc. are the old model numbers, so you won't find them anywhere on the unit. The new model numbers are:

Dana 50 = 229
Dana 60 = 248
Dana 70 = 267
Dana 80 = 286

229/25.4= 9.0
248/25.4= 9.75
267/25.4= 10.5
286/25.4= 11.25

Also a Dana 60 will have an 1 5/8 pinion nut, the 50 will have 1 1/8 nut.

No joy on a conversion. I have no idea why Ford made a solid D50. Strangely, D50s came in 250SDs, not 350s

That's funny, my 01 f350 has a 50 under it. As do most 99 thru 01's Yes there may be a few snow plow additions that had a 60. But they were a special order deal. So no, I'm not telling you xj's 60 is a 50. But if it came out of a regular 00 it would be.;)

Yup, the early SD ('99-'01-ish) F350's could have either one, and many people go through this same issue.

Last winter, we agreed to buy one of these SD D60s from a guy (contigent upon it being an actual D60). When he arrived with a D50, we sent him packing. It wasn't that he was trying to fool anyone, but simply couldn't tell the difference.

BTW, even though most of you already know this, I'll remind anyone looking for a SD D60 that the 8-lug pattern is metric and NOT the standard 8 on 6.5.

I have wanted to do the swap on the front of my SD for a couple years, but after spending 250 x2 on stupid sealed hub assemblies and another 200 bucks on balljoints twice in the last 4 years, I can't justify spending that kind of money on something that my dana 50 is still going strong in.

Here are some pictures of identifying marks so you can identify a Dana 50. I wish I would have had these prior to purchasing this.

The pinion nut is 1 1/8 on a Dana 50. It is 1 5/8 on a Dana 60.

The casting number on a Dana 50 is 229. It is 248 on a Dana 60. The number is cast into the webbing next to the pumpkin and is also listed on the tag if your axle still has one.

The axles on a Dana 50 taper from 1.5 inches to 1.31 inches where it goes into the carrier. It doesn't taper on a Dana 60 and stays 1.5 inches all the way into the carrier.

I hope this helps someone else from making the same mistake I made.

Just thought I'd share the specs of the Super Duty Dana 50.
99+ early leaf sprung
Changed the ball joints on my truck last week or so I snapped some pics.

The axle sticker will say "229" in the lower right corner which equates to the ring gear size: 229mm or 9"
IMG_20100927_153530.jpg

it will also usually have the gear ratio, mine is 4.10.

(Dana 60's have "248" meaning 248mm or 9.75")
IMG00723.jpg

this one has 3.73's

Dana 50
9" ring gear.
30 spline inner shafts. 1 6/28" at the splines
IMG_20111229_124212.jpg

1 9/16" shafts
IMG_20111229_124220.jpg

big u-joints 5-806x joints (same as a Dana 60)

1 16/28" stubs
IMG_20111229_124228.jpg

(neckdown smaller to 30 spline).

The difference is the 60 obviously has a 9.75" ring gear and 35 spline inner shafts.

Metric 8 lug
same ball joints, inner and outer knuckles on both
Big huge brakes.

1350 yoke.

Even the 50's are beefier axles than most would lead you to believe and yes you can get lockers that will allow off the shelf 35 spline inners to fit the 50.
And the hub is super easy to remove: all you need is a pair of pliers.

hopefully this will help un-confuse some. Both axles are nearly identical in appearance.

Take a pic of the pumpkin, sorta a top view showing the pinion area. The 50 has a pretty decent recess in the casting, where the 60 is fatter/beefier.

So how much of an improvement is a 50 over a 44? Are they all over the junkyards or still hard to find like a 60? Can they handle 37-40's without having to worry?
