As they own everything, I am on their DSL, through SISNA, who I love, and they've been awesome and also hate Qwest.

anyway, supposedly I'm forced to use their Actiontec router/modem/wireless thing (they've called it all 3.. :D). Anyway, it works fine, full speed, when plugged in. My laptop is about 15' away, and the wireless SUCKS! Very much random as to whether it works, how well it works, and how steady the signal is.

It is wreaking havoc with downloads and when I need to get my war on!!! damnit!

anyway, any gurus have any sage advice? I'd plug the damn thing in, but I would then be stuck on the kitchen island and that ain't right. :D

yes, I'd like some cheese.

buy your own wireless access point and add that to your network. Or maybe a wireless repeater to boost the signal?

Yup, buy a good wireless router plug the cat5 from the actiontec into that, turn off the radio in the actiontec and DMZ the actiontec to the new router. If you have this model, follow those instructions and you will be much happier.

BTW guys, SISNA and Xmission are both tree huggers

I too have quest, and a laptop. For me, when someone else is using the comp that is hooked to the modem, the internet, is slow for me too. Especially when I want to play counter strike!

I wholeheartedly support SISNA, they are all princes. I'll have to see about this tree-hugging bullsh*t though. -_-

I have line-of sight to the router.... interference should not be an issue. Nearest neighbor w/wireless is a few houses away. It's just that this router blows. I shouldn't need a booster to get the signal across the room.

Why are you required to use THEIR router? Qwest has tried to tell me that, too, but I've always used my own DSL modems and then plugged my favorite router into it. You will need your username and password to put in the new router...

no you just need to separate the new router's attached devices onto it's own subnet because the actiontec already acts as a router. Good luck though I just ran with what came anyway by just plugging a switch into the lan port of the actiontec I was able to hook up multiple wired devices with no further config :D

I have several modems and routers through years of getting 'free ones', so I don't even spend the $'s to buy their crappy one. When I bought on in Utah, they even had the balls to send me one ANYWAY and charge me for it! I called and made them pick it up and give me a full credit.

Their "standard modem" is now the actiontec GT701-WG. I asked for a standard and they sent the Actiontec GT701-WG wireless gateway for the standard lease amount. I was then able to give my old router to my parents who desperately needed one so it was win win for them and myself. Also with the way their stuff is configured even when I have wep enabled I actually get better thoroughput with the wireless than I did with the netgear router I formerly had so I am not complaining one bit. :greg:

It's not hard, the Actiontec uses 192.168.0.1 some aftermarket routers use the same ip, some use a 1 inplace of the 0. If the aftermarket router is using the same ip, you just have to change it to use 1 (or you can change the actiontec)
