Had to run a niece up to Rexburg yesterday for school so we spent the night at my grandparents house after dropping our niece off at her apartment and this morning as we were getting ready to head home my grandfather told me I could have his welder. He has only used it a couple times in about 20 years he said he has had it and its just sat in his barn. YIPPEE!!!!!!!!!

Now I need to figure out how to get a 220 plug in our garage.

Bullet proof, but you'll need a 50A plug for that. I had the hobart version (AC/DC) and ran it off of an adapted dryer plug. Every time I stuck a rod, the breaker would pop. But then, maybe you'll never stick a rod :)

That one is AC only, so he WILL be sticking rods. :D

well I got shot down yesterday. Looks like my inlaws saw my post about getting a welder on facebook and told me I better get a professional to do the outlet install which I was planning to do anyways then proceeded to tell me later that they dont want any wiring changed in our garage and dont want me welding at the house. Looks like I am going to just hold onto this one for awhile and find a 110 welder if I can find one powerful enough to work on my smoker trailer. I am just sick of driving to sandy to use a friends welder and the last time I was up there I drove up late after work, bought 5 pizzas for all the guys there that were going to help so we could crank it out and nobody did anything but me .

So what would you guys suggest for an affordable 110V welder? What amperage would be one to shoot for if I found one on ksl or elsewhere?

About as big as you can get for a mig is 140A. My dad has the Lincoln 3200HD, and I have a Hobart Handler 140 (or whatever model # it is that is that size). Both are 120V input and shielding gas capable. I love being able to run it on the #1 or 2 setting and hit any outlet around the house, #3 on on my generator (Honda 3000i) but #4 throws it in to overload. #4 requires a solid 15A but really needs to be on a 20A circuit.

I always recommend one that is gas capable, just in case you ever want/need.

Lincoln, Miller, Hobart; I've had awesome luck with all 3. A friend had a HF unit at one time, typical HF moving parts quality. JB weld was better than that POS.

I have never done mig but it would be a good time to start. Thanks for the suggestions guys. I really want to get this trailer built before these twins come and I have no time to work on it.

I bought a 500 dollar Hobart 140 welder that I've been pretty impressed with so far

I have this same unit and really like it. Honestly I find my self using it more then my nice Esab mig.
