This is common knowledge for most operating systems if you don't apply appropriate security updates after launch.

12 minutes...there is not another system out there that will be compromised within 12 minutes.

Yes there is. Do you want to know why? Because there are applications constantly running from the computers of script kiddies that are constantly port scanning for vulnerbilities. :)

Watch your firewall logs and see how many incoming port scans you recieve on a daily basis.

Just so happens that a lot of the vulnerbilities out there are for Win based systems because that is what is dominantly used out there in the world today. Had Macintosh been the dominant computer on the market with a the majority seat of users, it would be likely that the a majority of the attacts would be targeted toward macs.

I understand that but the point is how open windows by default. When I had first setup my Linux server I had several scans within minutes...it was a default setup and it wasn't compromised at all...how many Joe Schmoes know how to secure their machines in the least bit??? I'd say not very many and thats the reason windows has become so exploited. I have yet to see any articles saying "Linux compromised in 12 minutes" "OS X compromised in 12 minutes" "Unix compromised in 12 minutes" "BSD compromised in 12 minutes" ;) Yes, windows is the most popular and widely used but that doesn't exscuse the fact that the default setup is weak. I hear Longhorn is supposed to be MUCH better (I hope so, its been in development long enough).

Give me more reasons why I should switch to mac. :)

cause all the cool kids use mac :D

honestly, what works for you is whats best for you. I gave the mac a try (for $500 why not) and love it. Its was WAY different at first and I questioned it (cause things that were simple for me in Windows I couldn't do in OS X). Once I familiarized myself (and thats still an on-going task) I began to really enjoy using the mac over the PC.

Everyone knows you go with a Mac for the GAMES

:greg:

so tell me what happens when Apple starts using intel chips and there is no longer an advantage to using PC over mac for gaming :D...it will just be the software companies that will decide on what platform people game on :p

PS, I dont game so that arguement has nothing on me :D

how do I know if my windows is in trouble?

1. Use a firewall of some kind. Like a linksys router, or a software firewall (windows has a built in one now), just so your computer is not sitting directly on the internet. Try to get something between your computer and bored kids out there running scripts

2. get all of the "windows updates" from microsoft, they are free, and there is a reason they want you to update your computer. If you don't have a windows firewall this is how you get it.

3. Be smart with sites you visit, programs you install, emails you open, etc.

4. If it is important enough that you would be upset if you lost it, it is important enough to back up. Take the time once a month, or occasionally to put those important things on a CD.

there is actually a ton of them...for a good online one go to DSLReports.com and do it there, its free but it does take a few minutes for them to get back with ya. Its a really good scan, these are basically what kiddie scripters (or any one thats looking to get in) use.

Super already said this but here is the link to some tools

http://www.dslreports.com/tools

But just because you pass their test does not always mean you are safe. But it may give you ideas of how to improve.
