Gas tank cleaning

I dropped the gas tank in my Jeep in order to verify what pump I had in there to see if it would have enough flow for the LS motor however I apparently let things sit too long and there is a lot of varnish in the tank. The tank is a custom tank that was sealed inside by one of the radiator shops in town. It looks like the varnish comes off the lining if I wipe it down with carb cleaner but that isn't practical for the entire tank. What have you guys used to clean up varnish from a tank ? I don't want to ruin the liner inside if I can help it.

I wonder if paint thinner would to the job. It's not as strong as carb cleaner.

Por15 has a metal prep type cleaner, check them out.

I've read about the POR15 cleaner which is great on rust not sure on varnish. Acetone should work but I wonder if it will take out the tank lining.

I pressure washed a tank out last year. Worked awesome. Ethanol is water soluble.

I have a lot of varnish on the fuel pump sending unit and I think I will experiment on it to see what busts the varnish best.

Maybe try a strong vinegar solution? I'd be worried about taking out the liner with anything to strong.
