General Tech Gear Set-Up, 9"

Started doing gears in my buddies rig last night. Axles are from a late 70's F150.... Going from open with 3.55's to spool in rear, Grizzly front with 5.13's.

The 9" 5.13 is a much thicker cut gear than the stock 3.55..... So much so, that I can't get the ring gear to clear the pinion bearing housing without moving the carrier so far over that the backlash is 80+ thousandths.....

How do I fix this? Clearance the pinion bearing housing? Get thin cut gears ( are these available)?

TIA

It's pretty common to have to grind the casting around the pinion's nose bearing to clear the ring gear.

For people pulling up this thread in the future the same applies to 14 bolts as well

Thanks,

Years ago I set up many drag guys diffs back when most R&P's were built in the good old USA. Richmond and others beveled the ring also so the only grinding was to clean up the excess casting.
