Gearing the '85

So gearing has been running through my head. I don't want to do this twice, so I've decided to aim for where I'm going to end up and live with it until everything else matches. I've played with the calc at grimmjeepr, but I'd love to get some real world input.

33s and the 3rz in front of a w56 are where I'm going to end up. It'll eventually have a doubler or 4.7 gears or both, so with the diff gearing I'm more worried about road performance. I want decent mileage (I'd be content with 18-20 mpg), I want to be able to pull long grades at 65 mph while loaded for long trips, and I'd like to be able to cruise at 80 without completely winding the motor out - where's the sweet spot? I'm willing to gear now for the 3rz and deal with being undergeared for the 22re until I make the motor swap happen. Steve liked his 4.88s with the 35s, so should I be aiming at 4.56? I can see where 4.88s and 33s would give me more pep, but that's going to put me over 3000rpm at 75, how does the 3rz feel about that sort of thing? My 22re didn't mind being wound up, but had an annoying drone above 3000 that was hard to tune out. Has anybody run 4.30s with a 3rz and 33 inch tires? Was it useable, or did it lag on hills and in headwinds?

I would do 4.88's at minimum, the RZ series will spin happily all day long at 3k+. You may sacrifice some fuel economy but your clutch, t-case output and brakes will have an easier life.

What would I do? I'd go 5.29's and never look back. I've been burned by not gearing low enough before and that is an expensive mistake to re-gear twice.

I would go 5.29s since you have a rear axle setup with them already. Not to rain on the parade but how far out is the 3rz?

I'd go for 5.29's as well. Once you start building this thing, it's only a matter of time until your on 35's or 37's. Mark my words.

Not horribly far, if my wife lets me snag the tboned Taco I'm looking at picking up. If so, next summer.
