Candace and I are looking at getting a German Shepard... my family had one when I was nearly too young to remember, but as I recall it was a great dog. I've had a Aus.Shepard for the last 14 years  and he is still on the move , but his home is at my parents and he is far too old to transplant to our house.

She has been researching all the bloodlines, temperment, etc... and found some very up front sellers. They want us to put down a deposit (even though they are not available until April), and even go to a "dog meeting" this coming Monday. Seems we are in for ~$800 for a good papered pup.

Thoughts? I'm sure many of you have had germans, suggestions? $800 too much?

We love ours...she's been a great dog. I can't speak for price my wifes cousin breeds them so we got ours for free. I would get another without any second thoughts!!

They are awesome dogs! But, they will die early (you will put them down) because their hips WILL break down. The last several years of their lives will be spent in pain... it's a very sad thing to watch your dog go through. The more pure their blood line is the worse it will be. Silly inbreeding

As for price.... I will NOT get a papered dog, purebred = inbred. Many of the smartest and ALL of the most durable dogs are Heinz 57

IMHO Australian Shepards are about the best dog you can have.

I wouldn't get a purebred, for the reasons Meat stated.

Other than that, German shepherds are great. They're shepherds! And I've found them to be fairly empathetic as well. If I had more room, I'd have a couple right now. Great dogs.

Shepherd-type dogs in general are great: they can handle roaming around, they're good with kids, can be very well-trained, and have strong guarding abilities too.

X2 on the Australians

Had two of them. Damn good dogs. Smart, tough, loyal. Just keep them occupied.

German shepherds also tend to stink.

I currently have two JRTs and they're a handfull.

Get a Rottie

I personally think they are better dogs. I was raised with Shepards.

I'm all for German Shepherds Kurt.....couple of family friends have had them in the past and I've loved them. Meat is right, they do get hip dispacial (sp?) which can cause them a lot of pain. I've read that it's a lot more commmon in European GS's than American. Best bet if you're looking.....see how low they're rear hips are sitting compared to their front shoulders (?) The more level, the better for them in the long run. I'm also for not buying a "papered" buddy. Hit the Humane Society and any other animal shelters....You can probably find one there and if not a GS, you might find your other buddy you didn't know about.

My two cents :)

there is nothing wrong with purebred dogs as long as you see the papers and make sure that they are not inbred . I have purebred american bulldogs and they don't share any lines.

My ex has two GS. Unfortunately, she allowed them to sleep on the bed with her. Of course, I had to put a stop to that right away. I don't have a lot of experience with dogs, but they were overall good dogs. One of them would occasionally snap at people, but the other was very mellow. The mellow one was partially due to all the drugs the poor dog was on. This dog would have siezures that really knocked him out. Don't know if that had anything to do with breeding or not. The two dogs were brothers, so why one would get them, and the other wouldn't I have no clue.

I also second the humane society or other shelters. All of the pets (cats) I have came from shelters of some type. Even if you don't get a papered GS, you'll likely end up with a good dog that you can feel good about saving.

I've also heard that the lifespan of a GS is relatively short, My ex's first GS (before we got together) only lived for about 6 or 8 years.

I'm leaving the post that shows my fallibility, but I can't let a misspelling stand like that. I had a very exacting set of English teachers. :ugh:

My eyesight is really bad this morning.
I first thought this said you "had a very exciting set of English teachers":)
