Ghetto's 3rd Gen 4Runner

So I started a build on a 3rd gen runner a few months ago. I sold my rear engine buggy and wanted to build simmering less extreme. Something I could take camping and out to eat if I wanted. I wanted it to still be a capable wheeler though. This is what I have wanted to build for awhile. First of all I found a 96 4runner that was rolled. It was a limited with the 3.4 and an auto. It actually ran pretty nice but I wanted something different. This is how it started. uploadfromtaptalk1396236618834.jpg I am actually a little father in the build. I wanted to have some progress done before I posted though.

I wanted the openness of a Jeep, but I didn't want it to say Jeep on it. I cut the top off. I want to figure out a way to do a cage with a soft top. Here I'm starting the surgery uploadfromtaptalk1396237515090.jpguploadfromtaptalk1396237535878.jpg

are you going to put a windshild back in it?
I like how this is going, an easy way to get the roll bar in.

are you getting rid of any interier parts? im looking for the rear cupholder on the back of the center console

So l kept gutting it, pulling out the motor, transmission, transfercase, etc etcuploadfromtaptalk1396323257954.jpg I kept going and ended up pulling out the whole frame. Even before I pulled everything out I was starting to gather parts. I found an lq4 which is the poor man ls motor, the 6.0. And from the same guy I bought a 6 speed tranny that goes behind the older duramax. It is a zf-650. I found a stak 3 speed transfercase and a set of 1 tons that were geared and locked.uploadfromtaptalk1396323605363.jpguploadfromtaptalk1396323630636.jpg

I decided to build my own frame. I am not a big fan of the stock frame. I figured by the time I cleaned it up and modified it would be easier to start from scratch. I am using 2x4 .120 wall square tubing for most of it. uploadfromtaptalk1396324945155.jpguploadfromtaptalk1396324996112.jpg

I have sold most all of the parts. All of the drivetrain is sold. I have some of the stock aluminum wheels left. I sold the stuff in big pieces.

Awesome progress. So your 4runner doesn't have a 4runner frame, engine, tranny, tcase, or axles? :D

Are you keeping the body? Keep feeding us these updates, I like the direction this is going.

Nope its going to be a real Frankenstein. I have some other ideas for the front and rear that aren't 4runner either but I haven't got that finalized yet. Does anybody have an toyota ifs steering box for sale?

The axles I got from off of a blazer that I bought basically for the axles. The p.o. told me that they were 5.38's with detroits. The rear had 3 or 4 different attempts at a track bar welded onto them so I spent the afternoon cutting and grinding off old stuff. I came up with a simple gusset that I could Mount the 4 link to. uploadfromtaptalk1396497087065.jpg

I also started working on the front suspension. I am going to do a 3 link up front.uploadfromtaptalk1396795565163.jpg I am also going to run crossover steering. I have gone back and forth on whether to do full hydro or hydro assist.

Who has run full hydro on the street. What did you think? I have had it on my last buggies but I didn't drive them on the asphalt that much.

This was the first idea I had but it was the limiting factor for how low I could get it. The pan hard hit the frame, oil pan, and diff.uploadfromtaptalk1396795736436.jpguploadfromtaptalk1396795764721.jpg

I also wanted to change the link set up and shorten the wheelbase. So I left the top link the same length and shortened the lower links. I moved the panhard down underneath the link and put a bend in it. I was able to lower everything down about an inch and a half. This also shortened the wheelbase about 2 inches.uploadfromtaptalk1396922307882.jpguploadfromtaptalk1396922324763.jpg

I also switched to 1 1/2 tubing for the panhard. I did this for 2 reasons. 1 was it took up less space running between the frame and axle. The second reason is because I only have an 1 1/2 dye for my binder:rolleyes:

Here is where the shifter is going to come through for the 6 speed and for the stak. They are both going to be really far forward. I will have some room on my console. I want to mount my switches there. uploadfromtaptalk1396922996043.jpguploadfromtaptalk1396923018692.jpguploadfromtaptalk1396923045061.jpg
