ghetto's backwards buggy

So I sold my old rig last year. I wanted to build something smaller. With 42's and one tons it felt kinda like a monster truck wheeling with the Sami buggies I go with. I have been kicking around the idea of a mid/rear engine rig for awhile. I couldn't decide on a drivetrain for it though. A guy I know had a 2000 Tacoma that he wrecked so I got that from him. I haven't ran any of the newer toy stuff though. I had a supra 7mgte in my last rig but it was pretty easy to hook up.
Once I had the motor and tranny figured out I decided to keep it simple and go Toyota. I got a set of axles from zukijames. They had 5:29s and Arb's installed. I decided to go with a single t-case and 4.7gears. I wanted to do double but I don't have room with the engine where it is at. I hope with the automatic it should be fine. I am building the chassis out of 1 1/2 Dom. Ill try to get some pics up as I go. I started about a month ago so I have a couple.

For the adapter I have had a couple of issues. It is an inchworm adapter. At first I was mad at them but the more I go along I believe most of my frustration comes from the guy I bought it from and myself for not knowing enough about them. I bought it used, but I didn't think to much of it. He had it for a different application and had it set up for that. He lives near inchworm so he went and bought the parts for my application and swapped the coupler. By the time it was said and done it cost me more to buy it used. The biggest issue is I seem to be missing parts that I reordered, and since it was set up before I have to unset and reset it up for me. I didn't have directions. Thankfully josh at inchworm has been helpful. He got me the parts I was missing quickly. Got me a link for the directions and has been answering my questions. Knowing what I know now I would of just ordered from inchworm. The product seems good and their customer service has been good. I will reserve my final judgement for after its installed completely and I use it.

So for an update on the transfercase. I talked to josh and he said that the oil extension should stick into the adapter plate. Mine did not. It was a good 1/4 inch difference. I ended up using my drill press and die grinder to open it up. It was Saturday by the time I got back to working on it and I needed to keep moving. I'll try talking to them this week and confirm that my plan will work.ImageUploadedByTapatalk1362978457.601729.jpg I finished welding up the main structure and painted everything as well. My buddy came over this afternoon and we reinstalled the motor, tranny, and transfercase. I'll still have a few things to weld in but it's rattle can for this reason and easy touch up after wheeling. Now I'm at least finally assembling for good. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1362978340.740078.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1362978371.068371.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1362978386.684999.jpg

So basically on the transfercase, I had an old design. Hopefully doing the mods should make it work. If anything it looks like it may leak a little into the cavity in the back of the tranny but it shouldn't hurt anything if I keep an eye on the fluid. I have working on a lot of little odds and ends. I got a hurst shifter off of a mustang so I had to change some of the linkage and fab up some mounts. Built most of my tranny lines and fuel lines. Installed the tranny cooler and electric fans on my radiator and mounted the radiator. Built the lines for my steering. Finished welding up my front axle. I also got started on the dash. Here's a couple pics. I dig the mid-engine setup. I'm curious how you're going to set up the steering column and such, have you gotten that far yet?

Awesome hopefully you get it done.. I also was trying to get mine done for ejs last year and have about given up on this year
Many times I have set a goal to complete a truck or buggy for a certain event. It does not always pan out because of unexpected complications. However this has always gotten me closer to being ready the next time. Try not to get discouraged. It will all be worth it. And overcoming the issues that come with creating something special are rewarding and bring opportunity for learning all the ins and outs of every component on your rig. I personally do not plan to replace my truggy any time soon but when and if I do the next rig would need to be finished first. To avoid missing out on rides during always longer than planned down time. Sometimes a project that drags on to long can make you wonder why you did not pick an easier hobby. keep up the good work everybody and do not be ashamed to use hose clamps bailing wire and duct tape if that is what it takes. Woo hoo summer is almost here.:D

So after a long frustrating week I think I am going to try to run over to ejs tomorrow and stay through Monday. I was hoping to break it in on a couple closer trails but I like going down this weekend. If I have any major problems I can just watch others abuse their junk and drink.
Finally got a pic of it in the sunImageUploadedByTapatalk1364625033.884175.jpg
Also mounted my LEDs ImageUploadedByTapatalk1364625064.550192.jpg

It went good. I had a bunch of last minute issues that came up but ended up going down Saturday. We went over to potato salad hill. The first obstacle I did was psh:) I did a pretty easy line. I don't think they crowd was very impressed but I was super happy. Haha
Sunday we went to bfe and played around. I was overall very happy. We we went through upper hellderado. It walked everything except the waterfall.

My biggest issue i found was with the carrier bearing. Either i need to get a different style or redo the mount. I need to get it locked down better. I'll probably take a little break from it for a week or 2. I haven't seen the family much. I am still wanting to go to osrc in may, so I will get back to work on it soon.

James did you make it down for ejs? Are you going to osrc? I can bring those spacers. I meant to bring them but I was so far behind. I was still getting it to run on Friday and putting in my shifter linkage Saturday morning.

Good to hear! Nothing worse than major issues the first time out on the trail. Taking a break is a good idea, you deserve it for sure.
