After one "adventure ride" I decided the ttr250 was too small and I needed a more roadworthy bike. Sold the ttr and picked this up.

Very nice, I'm sure you already have, but if you haven't, check out Greg's build on his last DR650. Those bikes will do pretty much anything you build them to do.

DR's are so much fun, Caleb hit the nail on the head... you can set them up to do whatever you want. I've even seen supermoto DR650's!

I would own another DR650 without question, simple & reliable and fairly capable too! Caleb and I rode down Rose Garden Hill... he was on his small CRF450 and I was on my DR with the 8 gallon tank!

I mentioned this in the other thread, but my favorite DR650 parts supplier is Pro Cycle... - http://www.procycle.us/bikepages/dr650.html

New seat foam and cover from Seat Concepts, an IMS 5 gallon gas tank (there is now a Acerbis 6.6 Gallon Tank!) and a decent windscreen will really help for long mile trips. I put a screen from Screens for Bikes out of AU on my DR650 and I loved how it looked and worked. You could drop 1 tooth on the counter-sprocket for more control offroad, it never seemed to effect top speed or fuel mileage on my bike. Add a Giant Loop bag for carrying your gear and you'll be setup for most anything!

This was one of my favorite rides on my DR650, probably about what you have in mind. ;) - http://www.rme4x4.com/showthread.php?76370-Getting-Lost-Oil-field-roads-Petroglyphs-and-Canyons

Sweet bike. I hear great things about those bikes. I have also heard a lot of people supermoto them as well and they are a blast in that trim.

Due to some unforeseen circumstances, I had to sell this bike 2 days after I bought it. Fortunetly, those circumstances were very short lived. So back on the hunt I went. After nearly giving up, DR650’s a somewhat rare bird, I found this gem.

2003 with only 3k miles. The PO was an older gentleman who used it to run around a camp he ran for the LDS Church in Oregon. He nearly cried when I left with the bike. I assured him I would take care of her:)

So here we start again.

This bike has a head start on some mods.

DR200 brake light which is smaller then the 650 monster. K&N air filter with the box opened up, full coverage skid plate, Seat concepts foam and seat cover, a factory rear rack and Supertrapp exhaust.

Gearing is stock and seems pretty good. I may get a smaller counter sprocket for extended dirt trips.

My goals for this bike are

1. commute to work which is only 7 miles and no interstate.
2. Explore more back roads of Utah and the surrounding states.
3. Ride more dual sport type rides with my dad who has a KLR.

First order of business will be to get some sort of tail bag mounted for day trips followed by a wind screen and some hand gaurds. At some point, I see some SM wheels and tires in the picture.

Changed the oil, adjusted all the controls and lubed the chain Friday before taking a ride up to silver lake and over the alpine loop. This bike is a blast to ride.

I've been commuting on the DR and have done a few short rides. I actually rode up AF Canyon and completed the new section of 157.
I love this bike!

I needed a bag but don't want to buy anything until I figure out what I really want. So I mounted a small duffle I had and it's worked OK for now.

I also wanted to see how well a wind screen would work so I GA E the $6 wind screen a shot.

I'll report back on how it works.

If you are going to turn the YZ into a trail bike, lets put WR gearing in it and test it on yours before I commit to a YZ450. I have a parts list for you already and just need a bike to do it on so it might as well be yours. Craig who went to Moab with us on the YZ450 lost a chain and it took out his case. The case broke where the clutch arm entered the case. We thought it was toast because it has a seal on that arm so we figured since he had to split the case, he might as well put the WR gears in it. Problem is the bike is realistically only worth $2500 and the fix to have a shop do it would be $1500 for a new left case. He knows a guy from Bountiful who opened up a shop who said he may be able to weld it. Well, to shorten up this post, he was able to weld it by putting a very thin piece of sheet metal in the whole and then welded the case and use the sheet metal as the edge to weld up against. On the third attempt he got it so now we need someone else to drop the WR gears in a YZ450. Craig already has a Rekluse which he loves and wouldnt ever take out, he just wishes 1st was lower and 5th was higher and all the gears in between were spaced differently.

I'll report back on how it works.

I've seen other pics of the garbage can windscreen... it's not a bad look. How does it work? It looks pretty tall, the Screens For Bikes one I used on my DR was quite a bit shorter than yours and I liked it. I would occasionally bump my helmet on it in rough trail riding, but it kept the wind off my chest and put my helmet in fresh air right at chin level. Made longer rides much more comfortable, that's for sure.

So what part of cutting up a garbage can required the Multimeter?

I haven't had a chance to give it a high speed test yet but 45mph it works great.
I made this mostly to test how much I'd like the screen. If it works out I'll either buy one like yours Greg or maybe bend one out of plexiglass just like this one.

I'm starting to look like a klr owner;)

If I only had one project on the bench my ADD would complain.

I don't think it would be hard to make one out of plexiglass, long as you can get the shape right. Adding a little forward-facing lip at the top would help a lot too.

If you want to be like a KLR owner, you should have added a milk crate to the back of the bike first!
