You're other option is to go to school, spend hundreds of hours wrenching and fabricating and spend a small fortune on tools. Then you can be totally competent, charge yourself whatever you feel a decent rate is, and be as honest with yourself as you feel the need to.

Since most people can't do all that, Ben Hanks has done a great job on all my stuff.

I have also seen some a Mt. Logan's stuff (which is really nice) and they were more than helpful when I had a million questions about my Northstar project, so they're cool too. Just a little outside the SLC valley

Very true... Most people with the knowhow and tools, charge for their services. Those without knowhow and tools pay someone with said tools and knowhow. A lot of times most people have one or the other but not both.

I do all my own Fabwork, I have bought all of the highdollar equiptment, and its allmost broke me... I now spend less time fabbing brackets and other stuff from scratch, I just buy more prefabbed stuff spending less time on my rig and more time at work making the money to buy the stuff.

I used to think that the 4x shops were overpriced and out-of-line, as a buisiness owner myself I now know that they are probably were they need to be if not lower. Lots of money in equiptment and other overhead and tons of time goes into RnD and actual fabbing and mock-up.. It suprises me that they can do some project for what they do, and that others can afford to pay it.

If you want ridiculous high prices go to BGR (mis type or maybe not!!!!!) there are definatly better places to go

yea, I think that their prices are very fair. those are people who have invested a lot of time and money to be able to do what they do. I think it is perfectly fair for them to make a decent living doing what they do. If it is too over priced for you, go buy your own bender and dies, and pony up for a good welder and take the time to learn how to use it, and while you're at it you should buy a thousand feet or so of tube and practice bending and notching so you're fab work can fit up as nicely, look as good, and function well as theirs. Or you can go to some one who is just learning the trade and pay them half as much to practice on you rig. Hopefully they get it right and you cage, or bumper, or buggy frame holds up when you roll it and you don't die.

I should have mentioned Waynehartwig (Alljeep.com) if you just need to order parts he is who I buy from. I usually get my parts in 3 days and fantastic pricing. and great customer service. if you need hands on or fab ideas I go to BHR.

Also Carl down at Teraflex is also one of the most knowledgeable people I have come across. He took the time to inspect my buggy and gave me many tips even though I only spent like $30.00 there.

I also try to do as much of my own fab work as possible, but there are some parts that are not feasible for most folks to do at home. For instance, lathe work is one area that I can't do myself, and there's no way I could ever justify buying the equipment. Recently I had some links made at B.H.R. They were made to the exact dimensions, for the (very fair) price that I was quoted, and were turned out faster than I thought possible. That's been the case with ALL of the dealings I've had with BHR. I've never felt like their prices were "rediculously high". I'm thankful that they are around to help me with areas of my project that I cannot do on my own.

I had more links made at JJ's machine in Spanish Fork with the same positive results (BHR unfortunately didn't have the taps needed for my upper links).

There's no shame in a shop earning a profit if they do so by providing quality products and a high level of customer service.

:greg: Kidding,

I know that it is out of the SLC area, but Mt Logan Offroad, Great work, good prices, had been around the block, Not to mention been around forever (a real plus, if you have seen all the shops that have opened and closed in the last few years), and has one of the best fabricators around in Nate williams.
They do everything from full comp buggies, (build, race, and win)
Show trucks for Sema
Trophy trucks
Sick JK bulids
Etc.

I know that it is a bit of a drive, But last I checked most of us have phones.

Not that BHR isn't cool and all, but there are other options.

your right Mt Logan is great (but not in Salt lake).. Wayne Rocks (alljeep.com) for getting parts (and if you wanted to get your junk to Washington he could probably do some work for you). Not overly fond of the Rad Jeeper but maybe since he got a new mechanic things are better? but in Salt Lake itself I still say check out BHR

The hourly rate seems to be pretty close no matter where you go and that tends to be the highest part of the bill. If you are like me and don't have the equipment, know how and time to do your own work then you should be more concerned with what you are getting for your money. I talked to a lot of different shops and have one very close to where I live, BHR was the best I talked to but not the closest. I also have known people that had their projects started at one shop and finished at BHR. I have also seen that of other rigs in their shop when I have stopped by. I did not want to have rework or be unhappy and drag my junk from one shop to another. They did great work and I have been happy with it.

You do not have to listen to everyone here though. Talk to the different shops and go to them to see what they are working on and go with the one that you are most comfortable with.

Randy is a good guy and a good friend, that taught me A LOT, even though I don't always agree with the way he does business.
One thing you do have to give him is he has managed to stay in this business in this area for 30+ years, which is 10x more than anyone else can say....
Compared to Seth, Wooley, Creasey and others, that have come and gone, Randy is a saint:eek:

Ok I will be the ass,
how long have you had your rig back and how close have you looked at?

There is a really good chance that it isn't what you think it is.

I have never met anyone so happy to have screwed so many people.

Gotta love Randy's rip off's.

Vote for BHR(Ben or Von), or Mount Logan(Williams Boys rock), or Sexton off road (Can't say enough good about Dusty),

I had him do some work on a custom 205 t-case for my project, so I havent tested it yet and could be a long while before I do. The transaction actually got me a little work from him and that also went smooth and he paid in a timley maner which is more than I can say for another very popular shop on the site and I wont reveal who it is either. All the negative response, is reason for concern and I appericate it and will keep it in mind for future dealings but my experience has been good so far, maybe he has changed.
