Hope this is in the right section. What kind of GPS units are you all running? My sisters birthday is coming up and I would like to get her one. A nice one but not too over the top.

I will agree with that. I think you get what you pay for, but I have been happy with all of the Garmins. The eTrex line are very popular, the more you pay the more memory, maps or features you will get.

Like the others I have been very happy with my Garmin eTrex units. I started with the black and white Legend and moved to the Vista HCx. Both did everything I needed them to do for trail riding and hiking alike. Very easy to use, small enough to mount anywhere. Your more than welcome to stop by and check mine out.

As for places to get them... my first choice (local) is Sportsmans Wharehouse, they are a tad cheaper than some of the online places, but its in stock and they are locally owned. Second choice (if you have time to order) is GPSnow.com. Killer prices and the owner is a 4x4 dude himself (runs 4x4now.com).

How does this one do off the streets? Can you record your tracks?

To be honest i haven't really used it offroad much. I use it to get to the place im going wheelin, then turn it off and put it away so it doesnt get all dusty. But next time i go out i will check it out for sure.

I just got a Garmin Zumo 550 last week and used it on Saturday at the U4 cleanup.
It has city navigator and topo 2008 on it so it works off road.
The city navigator maps show a lot of the dirt roads in the west desert. It gave me directions right to Little Moab but it did call it little mobe.
I also have a Garmin 60Csx for carrying around and it has a dash mount but my eye sight needed the Zumo's bigger screen for driving

What about this in conjunction with my Pearl, or its soon to be replacement phone, my Curve?

Or this, since we seem to favor Garmin in this discussion...

I have always liked the idea of using a laptop coupled with the GPS probe in a vehicle, sure large.. but seemingly the DeLorme, will track your trail right onto the map loaded on the laptop while you drive.. embedding your trail as you run it.

I like that.

Maybe they all do? Never have run one, one of those deals, I don't want hate and discontent, so will be apt to spend more than I need on more than I will use, to make sure I get a satisfactory experience.

Can either of my first two link suggestions be tapped right into this? It does have a touch screen, and would seem to be able to give some control?

Be alot more convenient than a laptop, and...give a lot larger screen than a handheld?

They have another that I didn't link (walmart) that also is a touch screen, and uses Bluetooth as well as corded inputs...

From what I have read you have to buy one with navigation built in and you are stuck with what they give you.

I have been looking a lot on MP3car.com to eventually integrate a computer into the car controlled by a 7" touchscreen monitor. Then you could set up your own navigation, play music from the hard drive and set up OBDII monitoring... But it will be expensive! I hope to eventually accomplish this but I am still a ways off.

I have a bluetooth GPS device for use with my laptops (when they work) out on the trail. I really need to invest in a quality hand held. Many of the mapping software companies are building hand held specific software too. The biggest bonus with this is you can leave it all mounted in the cab, no wires to interface, etc. Then when you get out to hike, etc you don't have to disconnect the GPS from the computer, pull the GPS off the mount. Overkill for some, even myself most of the time.

Thats where I am at. I keep watching newegg and tiger direct for a smokin' laptop deal (found a nicely specd dell, with no optical drives for $200, that would been great, except for loading the "topo 7.0")

It will line up, and go... one of these days.

I started out with an old Garmin GPS12, liked it, moved to a megellan Pro. it was good also, differant to use.

Now I have the Jeep Trail Guide by Garmin, I love it. Easy to use and hooks right up to the Jeep.

so I say stick with the garmin, best for the money in my book

I do have a Delorme set that hooks to a loptop with Street atlas and Topo maps if anyone is interested. $100.
