Great deal on a 2TB hard drive

Costco has Seagate 2TB hard drives (external) for $99 right now. I bought a couple (6) of them, when I got home I tore one apart and it's actually a very nice drive inside. The drive inside is this exact drive. Just thought I'd pass this deal along to anyone looking for some storage (due to the flood, hard drive prices have gone through the roof and probably won't come back down for at least another year).

They do have a 2TB NAS (single drive) for $129 I believe. Something I forgot to mention is on Black Friday and that Saturday, they'll have $30 off this drive. Which means you can go in and get it price matched making these only $70 each.

Is this easy to set up? I have a Simpledrive backup but it has been a trial for me to use. What is the most user friendly of those you mention, NAS or Seagate?

Jack, it's extremely easy to set up. I got one a couple months back--you plug it into power, plug it into a USB port, and pretty much ignore it after that if you want to. :) The software on it will automagically make a backup of your system and keep it current as you make changes, plus you can use it like any other external storage.

Well the NAS is a Seagate. NAS simply stands for Network Attached Storage. Meaning, you plug it in to your network, and it's available to any device on your network that can use what ever protocols it provides. (Usually other computers) The NAS is more complicated to get setup and going, but is generally more convenient. The USB Seagate drives are as Carl said, plug it in to your computer and forget about it. Use it as you want, there really is no setup with them. I bought the USB ones because I only wanted the drives. I can't buy those drives alone for less than this, so it's worth it to me to buy them and tear them apart :D and then put all 6 in a single system that will be my NAS :)

Looks like I will have to give it a try. I do not need too much storage space but I am trying to keep track of all the U4 stuff on the computer because the paper is driving me crazy. I have a 17 year old neighbor that knows this stuff and he is going to help me get my system set up. Thanks for the info.

I was happy to snag a 1TB internal drive and a 1TB USB drive last year for $100 each. Should have bought a second internal for that price. 1TB in the NAS, and the 1TB USB backs up the NAS. Both kept in different areas of the house. Will need to make the NAS larger when I get around to building a media server in the next few months.

I also backup the the wife's laptop, daughter's laptop and mine to the USB. iPad2 will be backed up on the cloud, if I ever keep stuff on it.

Nov 25th, 26th, 27th this will be on sale for $30 off, in-store only. Take your receipt back to them one of those days, and they should refund the difference to you.

So could I buy one, take out the hard drive, and bolt it into my machine as an internal drive? I'm out of room on my first 2tb drive in my htpc and have been looking for a cheap second one.

I plan on doing what Carl suggested with all six of mine :)

Devin, yes you can if you system can take sata, in fact that's exactly what I'm planning on doing with all six of mine. You can't buy cheaper storage than this right now, even from the Internet.

I'm looking at the flyer thingy that has the $30 off price, and it does not appear to be a coupon. BUT, it does say "limit 5", so Caleb might be screwed a little bit. :greg:

The flyer isn't the normal monthly flyer, it's one you can get at the store. As Carl mentioned, it doesn't appear you need a coupon (there's no coupons in the flyer) Also, I only have 2 drives per receipt, so I'll just make multiple trips if I need to. :D
