Any updates on this project? I am building a new house and looking to get a plan in place before I pour my foundation. I am mostly interested in an affordable door, but is still decent quality.

I'll let you know soon. I currently have contractors at my house right now finishing my basement, so in probably 4-6 weeks I'll be doing the door on my vault.

I did something similar in December. I have a 30ft by 6ft wide concrete cold storage in my basement. I framed in a wall with 2x2 box tubing 1/8" wall thickness. For now I'm using a steel exterior door with deadbolt. A vault door will be added when budget allows.

I have a gun storage wall on one side and a workbench for projects and reloading on the other. I also plan to build some shelves for ammo box storage

The panels and hooks are Gridwall intended for retail display. It is nice and heavy duty. The wire is 1/4" diameter in 3" grids. I found it on KSL. There are tons of accessories you can get for the grid system.

I love what you did here, just wondering what you would do to insulate around the door for fire protection/heat, does it matter in a room with 3 concrete walls, ect. I have a similar space that may make sense to do this.

I figured that fire/heat damage would be rare since the cold storage walls and ceiling are all concrete. I did insulate the exterior wall (behind my gun racking) just to help keep the room at a reasonable temperature. I have a space heater set to 60* and a dehumidifier holding 25% humidity.

This is my dad's vault. Pro steel door. It's 7x18'. It's more full than this photo which was about two years ago. The square in the end is a bullet trap he uses to test hand gun loads for feeding issues since the vault leads off his reloading room. It's a nice benefit of a vault.

So, we are working through my 7’ 8” x 12’ office\rifle storage\man room. I’m thinking I’ll have a storage “locker” made out of similar\same wood as the house cabinets.

The officey part of the room. I’d put my reloading stuff on the left side of this picture.

Something like this on the other wall to the right of where you’d sit at the computer. Anyone have any clever locking cabinet ideas for a much wider version of this pantry thing?

Locking barn doors is tricky because the hardware can easily be removed. Mag locks are a decent option but a few draw backs. They are fail safe so lose power and lose the lock. Small battery backup is cheap and can hold more than a few hours though so it’s not as easy as just unplugging power. The other draw back is the hold force is rated direct. Meaning if someone removed door hardware they could use the leverage from the far end of the door with a pry bar to pop the lock. The cool thing is it’s easy to set them up with keypads, rfid readers, hidden switches etc.

When I say easily pop the lock it’s not that easy. The door would likely break first but it is possible to pop a mag lock.

I was wanting a gun locker for a long time. I was going to put it in my office also, kind of as a fun display. We are doing a metal theme through the house, so it was going to be metal framed with an expanded metal cage.
Ultimately I decided against it, because no one needs to see/know what I have.. and my office is not anywhere near the bedroom where I sleep.. and with the small kids, it seemed more of a risk than a benefit.
That being said, I still wish I had one. Can't wait to see what you do.

I’m not necessarily married to the barn door idea at all. If it’ll work, that’s great. If the doors can be secured with a hinge and kewl locking system, that’d be fine as well. Something like a cedar chest lock look but 50000% stronger than that. Not into showing off what’s in there. No one needs to know.

UNSTUCK

But stuck more often.
I have the same cold storage under my front porch. One day one of the kids spilled something on the porch. I pulled out the pressure washer to clean it up and while doing that I went over the whole porch giving it a good cleaning. Later that day I found myself in the cold storage and was pretty much shocked at how much water leaked into it. Knowing that now, if I was do something like this I would take some extra waterproofing steps to keep the water out. It would be sad if the house caught on fire and the concrete did it's job keeping the fire out, but then all the water from the fire department still ended up ruining stuff in there.

Overnight I've just thought of having a "walk-in" closet built in that room? It's not a big room but I think I have space to do a small walk-in closet. Think of a small kitchen pantry size. In our current house, there's a bedroom that has a closet like that. I'll have to give that space a good measuring. If not the "walk-in", there's another bedroom with double doors on the closet that just feels big because of the opening. If I can figure out a way to secure the double doors (solutions are out there) that could work as well. I've always wanted an exposed brick wall in a room. Maybe I can do some of that on/around the closet to give it the appearance of security?

I have the same size room in our current house. In fact the new house's mbryson room will be 8" wider. The current room house's mbryson room is kind of a full scale mock up if you will. My wife was down there complaining about the decor. We realized I had repurposed stuff that had been kicking around our house for years. I've probably spent $40 "decorating" that room when we moved in. She felt pretty bad about giving me a hard time for the $40 investment. I've thought it was kind of fun (a little butch). I've never had my own room before. Pretty happy to get it and just made things work with what was laying around.
