heat treating nv 241 shaft

I am trying to build my own klune style crawler box, using an nv 241 out of a chevy. I need to modify the mainshaft (shorten and respline) which I think I can do. My question is what is the material, and can I heat treat it in a furnace or does in need to be induction hardened? If I can atleast find out what the material is I can figure out the rest.

Why not call Cryocon? they are local and are usually contracted by others out of state.
