help, I made the neighbors mad.

Well I made a bunch of the neighbors mad at me the other night when I was putting some primer on my jeep. When I had just finished the third coat the county sheriff knocked on my door. He asked me if I was running an illegal paint shop.... seems one of the neighbors called and told them we do this all the time for money. This was the first time I have ever painted anything and I have three stages of filters on the air but I guess that isn't enough. He told me that it was illegal to paint cars in a residential area for profit but that the health department had a waiver if you are painting your own car. So technically I could continue but since I live in an area where people solve there personal issues using the cops and lawyers I don't dare continue. So I need to know if anyone knows of a place that will rent me a paint booth for my finish coats of paint. I also need to rent a trailer to haul the jeep to the booth since it is all in pieces and not registered to drive on the road yet. Maybe I should go homestead out in the middle of the west desert where I can get away from everyone......

go get the health department waiver...and tell your neighbors to kiss your ass.

If you obey the law...You are in the right!

Absolutely. I've had to deal with my share of asshole neighbors and that's what you gotta do.

Kind of strange that they did this. My dad has painted lots of cars at his house and no one ever complained about it. Personally, I would get the waiver. But, I can also understand why you wouldn't want to tick them off more.

I'll bet it was just one neighbor, I would just continue, sounds like your about done. I'm sure when the deputy arrived he could tell your weren't running a business out of your garage.

Unfortunately there were three that called me in. The deputy did say that the only reason they came was because of the call that claimed I did this all the time as a business. I do have some elderly neighbors that are sick and I really don't want to make them worse. I thought my filter system was working well enough but I guess not.

They don't know how good of a neighbor they have. Most problems like this, the police arrive, and it becomes a "well they do this all the time, and those neighbors over there do this all the time, and those ones over there..., go arrest them!!"

Sorry to hear about your problems Dave. I sent you a PM. Those neighbors just don't understand how unprofitable this hobby is, now do they???? :D

I would get the waiver and then find out just how early you can leagally begin working. Then start about five minutes after that. Make sure your work requires a compressor sitting as near to jackass' house as possible maybe you might need some other loud power tools running as well. An impact gun running at say 6:30 on a saturday morning might send the message. :D

get the waiver, mail a copy to all the neighbors within a one block radius of your home.

This would cost less than the rental of a booth, the rental of a trailer, and the gas to haul your rig to the shop.

Your almost done, and by the sounds of it you most likely will not be painting another car anytime soon.

Seriously look into the waiver route, sounds to me it is your best option.

Good luck with it though, sucks to have neighbors like this.

That's just rude. You don't have to turn into an ass. Just get the waiver, let them know you have it, and go about your business. You don't need to be an ass, but you don't need to stop doing what is your legal right to do.

it sucks to find out you have enemies when you don't even know it huh! I try to be as civil with my neighbors as possible but there are certain lines you don't cross. Perhaps if they have seen you painting one part of your rig then another part another day they feel that it is 2 different cars. I would do the waiver and possibly go talk to them and let them know what is going on so they don't freak out.

Sad thing is you could get some attitude from the one guy who called 3 different times and complained so they thought it was 3 people in your neighborhood or 3 neighbors that are good friends... explain to them that you are going to finish your Jeep and that is all you are trying to accomplish. You probably will get the attitude but at least that makes you the better man for letting them know what is going on.

It is so sad that people can't mind thier own business. It's not like your growning and selling pot or something. Good thing everyone knows what everyone is doing and is informed  . I hate neighbors like that. Good thing my neighbors just talk crap about us and not call the cops on me.. course they couldn't since I only work on my Jeep in the afternoon and there is no sound ordinance then.

Good luck Dave!

I love nieghbors....we are at the ghetto end of a NICE street, in the ONLY rental property around here  Nieghboracross the street grows pot in the garage, and has the sheriff there about once a month for a domestic. Then there is us with the various vehicles and parts. As you go down the street you get into 200k, the 300k and by a block away you are into 500k houses
I used to get turned in for parking in the dirt and not a "drive way" a load of gravel fixxed that problem :greg:
