That's a far cry from a 120 Series 4Runner with a 4.7l V8! Are you really going to be happy with on older, underpowered 4Runner? Just curious... ;) I love my leather, IFS that rides well, quiet interior and A/C that rocks.

I'll be happy with it for a little while at least. :)

I think I'll really dig it. When the motor gives up the ghost I'd put a 3rz in there.

aside from my 100 series, I've never had a rig with a large engine. I've had enough 22REs to know what to expect power-wise.

For me, it would be the whole package... if I'm going to spend a lot of time in a vehicle, I want it to be nice, comfortable and ride well. I have dealt with older vehicles plenty and I totally understand liking them for the nostalgia, but it sounds like your best 2 options are so far apart it makes me wonder if you'll be happy for very long with the older vehicle choice.

I have a hard enough time being happy with any vehicle for a long period of time. I like the simplicity of the old trucks. They're super easy to work on and parts are super strong, especially when you keep it near stock. Leather and a V8 would be nice, and who knows, after 6 months I may decide I want to go that route. I could easily sell this rig and get my money back if I decided to go that route.

You guys could be spot on, and I appreciate you talking sense into me. Keep the advice coming.

I've been doing some research on the monteros, and for the ones I want, they're not as cheap as I had thought. They're great rigs, but for $2000-3000 more I could get something really nice. The low price point is tempting for the monteros and the old runner. For the price of sliders and bumpers for a 100 series I could have this runner.

I realize with the old runner that my biggest complaint will be cargo space. The spare takes up a lot of room inside the truck. I think if I keep it close to stock it should have plenty of power and it should be comfortable enough on the freeway. It'll never feel like a modern truck, but I haven't found a modern vehicle I like yet.

I got very lucky when I bought the 98 Montero, I picked it apart as I drove it and pointed out the little issues with it, I made no mention of price but the seller started adding up these things in his head and offered to sell it to me for the dollar number I had thought of before I ever even went to look at it. The leather is near perfect and the interior overall is nicer than probably 90% of cars of that vintage, my wife absolutely loves the heated seats. The major "issue" was a bad vibration that was solved with a good tire balancing, but we had no idea if it was a more serious issue at the time. I paid about half of blue book for it in the end.

My point is, if you know a lot about the vehicle you are shopping for you can usually pay what you want for it, it's all in devaluing the vehicle in the sellers mind. I hope you do get a Montero, they are one of the lesser known vehicles that are built far better than about anything in its class, but at the same time you need to buy what makes you happy. One last tidbit, full coverage on the 98 Montero was only $7 more a month than the 96 ZJ, driving an obscure vehicle in comparison to the masses that is less stolen has its perks I guess.

Just promise me you won't send that link around to your friends so they beat me to the punch. :)

I should send it around to everyone I know since you sold your Taco out from under me (my brother) ;).

J/K it's all good and I won't be sharing it. We were in SoCal over the 4th of July for my son's soccer tournament and I was constantly picking my chin off the floor with all the uber clean 1st Gen 4Runners we saw out there. Stupid Utah rust!!! That 4Runner seriously looks like a really great truck and I've always been a big fan of those. I hope it works out for you.

Thanks Adam. I hope the seller decides to sell it. He's going back and forth, so we'll see.

California definitely has some gems out there.

Nice. Assuming he decides to sell it to me, I'd be leaving tomorrow evening around 6 PM and heading for So Cal. Camping somewhere along the way (Lake Mead maybe?, picking up the truck Sat afternoon, then driving back. It's going to be a grind.
