Just want to say hi to everyone this is my first time posting here. I am from Tooele, UT. Anyway, I am going to be leaving for the elk hunt this thusday. While on the highway today my jeep was wobbleing when I would reach 50mph or faster. When I let off the gas it did wobble. So it makes me think a u-joint, but what one? Anyway what can cause me to wobble at 50pmh or faster? If it was an a alignment thing I belive it would wobble even when I let off the gas. So being the weekend, and no shops are open I cant do much right this min. What can I check myself before I take it to the shop? I only have a few days to have it fixed, and working 2 jobs I just dont have the time. Its a 1996 jeep XJ.

Hard to tell from your post, but the dreaded death wobble only starts at about 45mph. Did you lift it? Sounds like the caster angle is off, and an alignment will cure the problem. The more ya post, the more you'll learn round these parts. :D

Well, the jeeps been lifted for over 3 years now. Its never done this before, thats why I was mabe thinking a u-joint or something. Just didnt no if I can check that stuff before I replace it. Could have just goten out of alignment. I am not new or anything to jeeps though.

You've got a loose front end part (control arm bushing, track bar bushing or mount, tie rod/draglink, etc.) or you need a toe adjustment.

Get under the rig, (while tightening, watch for ANY cracks on brackets at the unicar end and the axle end--watch for worn bushings, links, johnny joints, heims, etc.) tighten the bolts on the upper control arms, lower control arms, track bar, track bar mount (watch that one--I ended up just welding that to the unibody) draglink, tie rod and steering box. Pretty good idea to just go over that stuff regularly (after hard use or every couple of months---whichever is more frequent). If that doesn't fix it, you'll need an alignment. If that doesn't fix it, you've missed something on the tightening.....

check your balance on your tires, if there not balanced properly the Gyroscopic effects of the tires can fight each other and cause the tires to Death Wobble.
if you've ever aired down and wheeled chances are you've either knocked off your weights or spun your rim inside the tire so it put what you had in the wrong spot anyway. Try rotating your tires put your rears on front and see if that helps.
this fixed my problems maybe it will help you.

Alright, I will be geting under there after I work today. When I tighten these things up, should there be a set tightness for them? Or is tight, tight? Thx for the help, hope I can get it fixed.

I would bet my money on a tire out of balance. Get them roated and balanced and see if it helps. If not it may be your track bar getting worn out.
