Help me pick a computer

I need to buy a pc to run Quickbooks at the office.

Since I am a Mac guy I have no clue which one to get.

I am thinking a cheeper Dell. Since all it has to do is run QB it shouldn't need much. But I don't want a pos either.

Yes I know I can run window on a Mac. But I would rather spend a little an something simple to run that program at the office and get a new Mac tower for home later.

Yes I know they have a Mac version of QB. But the accountant is not intelligent enough to swap the files back and forth.

So what would you get?

I would look for the simple Dell box. I just ran through a order and you can get a computer with a 17 LCD monitor, warrenty, etc, for $589 that would be great for what you are looking for. You can always spend more and get more. But maybe start with a Dell and use that to compare anything else you look at.

I would have to say go with Dell also. That is what we got here at my work for are accounting to run QB and there other programs and they work fine. We spent right around the price rusted said and they are really nice computers.

IMO Dell is the best pre-built computer you can get.

wha? I thought fancy mac's could run PC programs and OS and what not?

I got that lecture from my Mac loving room mate about 6 hours before I found a couple programs he had loaded on my computer because he couldn't run them on his mac.

love it!

someone doesn't like to read

BTW, what programs could he not load? I have yet to find a Windows program that won't work on a Mac under either Parallels, or Bootcamp. Some games maybe but under Bootcamp that's no longer an issue either. (and with Parallels 3.0 about to be released it will no longer be an issue there either ;) )

FWIW, we use HP desktop and Laptops at my office (if the users are on a PC and don't have specific needs), we've had far less problems with them than Toshiba, Dell, or any other brand. They are a little more expensive though.

I've got VMWare Server tucked away on a underused PC that runs a virtual machine specifically for Quickbooks. Then I can use a Remote Desktop client from my desktop (PC), or my MacBook (onsite at clients via VPN)
I also use VMWare Fusion on my MacBook, works really well (if you've got an Intel chipset)

Something else to consider would be a Mac Mini, then load XP on it.

Dude, I'd get a Dell. Couldn't help it.

Really, I'd get a laptop. You can get a well equipped, used Dell C600 on eBay for under $200.

1) Read all the instructions before you start your work.
2) Your room mate is a moron.
3) Virtual porn is not a program. Its a problem.

Problem with HP is their warranty and 'throw it away and buy another FROM US' attitude. With thier tech support, everything is a Window's problem and they will fight to prove that before offering support. Sony is as bad, but they would just rather not fixing it. Toshiba is much better. Gateway is ok, if you can get through the language barrier of India tech support. Dell is no questions asked and they actually want to fix it right the first time. To me, that is all a no brainer, Dell all the way.

...And that wasn't a bad laptop back in it's day! That same platform lasted Dell about 7 years, or more... CPx series and C6xx series....

Personaly if you are going to buy a Dell laptop, you should buy my loaded D600 :D

I deal with my guy in OK. I've never called India for a Dell thing. (that's becoming quite the touchy sales question of late---people are getting upset when I ask that and then I become disinterested after a 'yes' answer)

Dell discontinued India support about 2 years ago, after a short lived 6 months? Too many complaints, and they actually cared enough to listen. Much like the others (Gateway...)

The only problem with picking up a base or low level PC, is Quickbooks is a turd to run then. I have 2007 Pro on my D820 laptop and it's even pretty slow on it.

So point is - whatever you get, get at least 1 gig of RAM, 2 would be better.

Quickbooks 2007 is the only version that will run on Vista (to my knowledge). Older versions have also been discontinued and htey no longer offer support for them. If you use Quickbooks to process your credit cards, that ended May 30th. Just some useless FYI's...
