really that what my said it might have been so would just changing the oil help or do i have to get new bearings?
I would imagine that you didn't smoke the bearing's if there is gear oil in the case.Have you checked the fluid to see if there is any in it?If there isn't I would pull it and inspect.

also if it's the wrong oil, using too heavy or too light an oil can cause the bearings to not get sufficient lubrication or heat transfer.

At this point you're probably taking a chance if you don't get it checked out. You might be able to drain the oil (if there's any in it) and re-fill it and be fine. Tough to know how much damage has been done. How good is your luck?

chances are that if you fried it enough to smoke and now whenever you spin that bearing now it stinks chances are you burned it up pretty good. i'm surprised it didn't seize or something but hey who knows. if i was you i would just pull it and buy a regeared case from marlin. but that's just me.
