Help!! What's wrong with my Tranny?

I just picked up my Jeep TJ from getting the following work done:
6" Lift
4.88 gears
AA short shaft kit
Tom Woods drive shaft
35" tires
Detroit rear locker

The problem is that on the way home I started grinding gears as I upshift. It's weird cuz when I down shift the gears are smooth but when I go from first to second to third to fourth it grinds a bit each time. Could any of the work performed cause this grinding? From what I understand (only a little) nothing in the tranny should have been touched.

P.S. I only have 16000 miles on my Jeep.

Perhaps your shifter is hitting the body tub and is not allowing you to shift all the way into the gear, causing a bit of grinding when you let out the clutch? May have to notch your tub a bit.

How would that have all of a sudden changed? I didn't have this problem on my way to the shop....only after I picked it up.

Because they installed a 6" lift, which probably came with a skidplate drop, which would have moved your transmission down in relation to your body tub, which would have moved your shifter in relation to the floor.

I don't know what type of jeep you own so I will guess a TJ. Is it possible that the clutch needs to be adjusted? For some reason the clutch is not slowing down enough when you shift. I can't imagine that the shop whould have had to mess with it though.....

You are correct, the trany should not have been touched...

No skidplate drop. Short shaft has been installed.

Any other ideas? Also I seem to have a lot of play in my rear driveline like the back lash isn't set right. The guy at the shop said it is normal because of the Rear Detroit...but it just doesn't seem right. Is this normal to be able to turn the driveline an 1/8 of a turn?

so are you saying you ahve already checked out the given ideas? If not go check them before asking for more ideas...I will put money on the two things already mentioned (clutch out of adjustment or its hitting the tub)...

What shop did the work?

I am not looking to throw anyone "under the bus" here. I am just trying to see if this could have been caused by the installation process.

It's not that it won't shift. It just has a short grind and then it goes into gear.

I think the person that did the install may not have had the experience our just ****ed up, we all have done that sometime are selfs. So just take it back and have them take a look at there work and fix it. So you can go wheeling!!!!

Not often am I accused of being commendable!!!
(It was Ms. Conceptions)
I really like J.R. and feel like he knows whats what. Not to mention his approachable personality.
However, I took it back and asked him about the excessive (in my opinion) backlash and he said that is normal for a rear end with a detroit. (???)
As for the gear grinding I can't see how anything he did would make that happen. No transfercase drop kit was installed. No body lift was installed. Just front and rear 4.88's a rear super 35 kit with a detroit locker, and a short shaft kit.

I was just kiddin' around, but...

Sounds like you've talked to JR and are working on getting it taken care of. :)
