I'm looking for some advise on my what seems to be my underpowered 84 toyota. It has the 22r motor. header, stock carb.mild cam, 4.88 gears, lockers, marlin crawler. runs on 33x10.50 swampers. The thing seems so underpowered. It takes me about 1 mile to reach 50 mph and hit 5th gear. Not sure if this is normal or not but looking for any advice on what to get a little more zip out of it. Not interested in a motor swap at this time though. Thanks.

Try converting to EFI? You've already got the exhaust header and the cam, converting to fuel injection and adding a bigger intake would likely make a large difference.

I'm probably the only guy in the world that prefers the stock Toyota carbs over EFI :-\

When it comes to being abnormally low on power I find timing, vacuum leaks or bad plug/wire/cap/rotors are usually to blame. I have seen that little spring loaded contact in the center of the cap (where the coil wire touches the rotor) disappear on these motors more times than I can count. They've always run decent but are very low on power--you could check that. If theres any corrosion in there scrap it and get a new one along with a new rotor.

What is your timing set at? I've always ran mine a bit advanced to compensate for the elevation. If I go by the book settings it can't get out of its own way lol. If you have a light I'd try 2* advanced above factory recommendation and see what that does.

Check that your choke is opening properly and don't rule out a clogged secondary jet/circuit especially with todays fuel. It would not hurt to pull the float bowl cover off and spray carb cleaner through the secondary jet and make sure it sprays into the throat of the carb (second barrel). You can also set your float/needle height during this time which will make it run a billion times better off road. Be careful not to loose all those micro clips lol.

If you still can't figure it out check for excessive slop in the timing chain. Every 22R will have the guide problem in its life, however most have been fixed by now but its funny how often just the guides are changed and the old worn out chain is left in place  Hope this helps,

Andrew

thanks RB. I will check the things you mentioned. It seems to be running fine, but will dig deeper. Any other ideas would be appreciated also. thanks again. What is all involved in doing a EFI swap and app. at what cost. Also remember I'm In NE so finding any advice or wisdon and parts around here is hard to find concerning toyotas.
