HELP-XJ towing

Have gun, will travel
I need to tow my XJ from Payson to Price tomorrow but it has a bad T-case that is slipping when you drive it. Does anyone know if I put it in neutral in the trans/transfer does that chain still spin? I don't want the chain to break and go through the case. I will be towing it on a car dolly.

sorry for the dumb question, just wasn't sure.:-\

Thanks!

Sorry, Just realized that this should have probably gone in the trailer/tow column....oops.

It would be quick to pull the rear driveline and then you don't have to worry about it. I am not sure how much of the t-case moves on that one.

If you are pulling it on a dolley and the front wheels are not turning you should be okay. As long as the front driveshaft isn't turning, the chain won't be moving.

I'd still take out the rear driveline, and zip tie it up in the chassis. That would prevent leakage, and any other issues that you might magically run into.

Yup, the chain only turns when in 4wd.... As easy as it is though, I think I would still pull the rear driveline. You have to pull it anyway to work on the Tcase. Just think of it as one step closer to having it out! :D You can put the rig on the dolley first and then pull the driveline...

As for spilling fluid, take a 1 liter bottle, cut the top off, and tape it over the tail cone. That will catch it all...

That is what I would do. I crawl under with some black electrical tape to hold the u-joint caps in place, and a coat hanger and tie it up to something.

Wow....who knew that would become such a mess? Got it done, just pulled it and tied it up. I know that I wouldn't need to normally, but if you knew the kind of racket that sucker was making just rolling down the road with it in, you would have worried about it too. I just didn't want to knock a hole in the case since I had traded it off, or leave an oily slick up the road. Anyway, thanks for all of the input and/or help.
