how to combine jeeps at halloween!
This is a 1944 GPW (made by Ford) G503 1/4 ton reconnaissance car. This restoration was started summer 2010. The inspiration for this jeep comes my friendship with a WW2 vet. Glenn Marston was a dear friend, College Professor, and career patriot. He served in the 11th Airborne Corps, 187 Infantry Regiment (airborne glider) in the pacific theater of operations. He was a stretcher bearer in a medical unit. Sadly, Glenn passed away last year before this jeep was done but he often spoke about wanting to drive it.
The 187th was a highly decorated unit and is still serving today. The 187th received the title "Rakkasan" which in Japanese translates loosely to 'falling down umbrella'. It was the only unit to repel a Japanese airborne operation in WW2.
in May 1944 the Regiment deployed to New Guinea. During this time the Japanese mounted their only airborne operation of the war. The 2nd Battalion of the 187th defeated the Japanese and captured their flag, which still hangs in today in the museum at West Point.
This jeep was built in January 1944 in California. Its true military history is unknown. Hence the dedication to my friend's unit and memory.
And since it's halloween, we put it with the crawler. The driver of the crawler is vinny. you might say he's also an old war vet.
