HITR trail, where to camp if only one night.

We are going to do Hole in the Rock trail this weekend along with all the other Memorial Day vacationers. We will be starting the trail Saturday morning and coming out on Sunday afternoon in time to catch the Ferry to Bullfrog. There will be 4 Wrangler, 4 Rovers and 1 Toyota truck for a total of 25 people.

Most of the reports I have read had them camping two nights, we only have one. We will be camping in RVs somewhere around the trail head if possible or maybe even down the trail as far as we can resonably tow the tent trailer, some of our group will be hoteling it in Blanding so will have to get up early and meet at the trail head. Then set out from there.

The question is where do you camp both on the trail and the night before? Can you camp at the end of the trail?

Oh, I will have the trail downloaded into the GPS so way points of camp spots would be beyond wonderful.:D

You could camp at the airport the first night (we did) then motor in on the trail and camp at the end. You'd better be hauling ass if you do it though. It's not a short trail and most of it is rough slick rock, not much high speed stuff other than Grey Mesa.

Honestly, if you want to enjoy the trail, you REALLY need to add another day to it. Otherwise, well, beat the crap out of you rig and haul ass.

Agreed with Brett, while it is physically possible in those short time constraints, its going to be rushed beyond fun IMO. The group out of Blanding has an extra couple hours of drive time just to the trailhead. Doable yes... comfortable, no.

Agreed, if they are hotelling they'd be better off staying at Bullfrog Marina and catching the first ferry over in the morning. Hanksville and the ferry route is about the same as Blanding.

Thanks for the input. I will pass it along. I would love to make it a two-night event and enjoy it rather than push it hard but we may not have that flexibility. This is going to be the first trail for some and I want them to enjoy off-roading.

Should we be concerned if there might be T-storms this weekend, flash floods or does it not follow washes? Will the trail be impassible if there is rain - to muddy?

It's still driveable, if a bit more interesting, in the rain. When my group ran it, out second day was during a monsoon. Some of the climbs were harder for me (open diffs at the time) but everyone else was fine. It did get so bad that we had to stop since we couldn't see more than 20 feet in front of us because of the rain. Here's a pic to show you flash flooding on the trail.
