Homemade toy sas kit?

Anybody on here make their own SAS kit for a toyota pickup or 4runner? What springs did you use? How hard/long did it take and what did it cost? I have a 88 4runner that I want to make a kit for and looking for ideas.

I cut off the old hangers on mine, and built new ones to use chevy springs.

I guess what you build really depends on the axle pad width. Are you staying toy axles, going full width? etc.

Sorry. I plan on using the solid toy axle. I have a set of front springs from a 80's suburban that look perfect length for matching up with the frame. The springs are 47-48" eye centers. The problem with the springs is they both have a siezed bolt in one eye. I can press that out but the other problem is they are 3" wide and the yota is 2.5. I have researched a bit but cant find what springs. I have heard of using early toy rear leafs and I might go that route. I am not afraid of spending money to do it right I just cant see spending $1300 on a SAS kit for a $800 4runner.

Your 80's suburban springs are 3"?

Im using the 73-87 chevy front leafs, mine are 2.5" wide. With the bushings the springs are 3 1/2 inches wide.

If you want to use 2.5" chevy springs. Just destroy the bushings to get everything out of the ends. Order a set of greasable spring bushings with bolts from Off Road Design, also get the shackle bushing kit, might as well as get the shackle sides too.

Take and outside measurement of the shackle bushing kit, get the correct size DOM for that bushing, drill and sleeve the frame for shackle with newly aquired DOM.

For front hangers, take a chunk of 4"x .25"wall box tube, and cut out some front hangers, then weld to bottom of front crossmember.

You are free to look at my front hangers for the 73-87 chevy springs if you are ever near the north ogden area.

Shackle kit on ORD is $99 plus you would need the front spring bushings, greasable as well at $27 or $29 depending on spring eye size.

Then add the cost of some DOM, and 4" box tube.

so should be less than $200 total to sas.

p.s. you will also need to extend the drivers side spring perch about 3/8 of an inch so your toy dont lean.

Here are my hangers, you may want to add the cross tube below the factory crossmember like the production kits do. That is if you need the additional ride height.

For how cheap the kits are these days, it takes a lot out of the guess work. But If you have a lot more time then money I would say your gonna have a good 20-30 hours making and finding all that stuff just to save 3-400 bucks

I am a hvac guy and I am in slow season so I only work 15-25hrs a week. Time is something I have where money is not. Perfect for making my own kit and scrounging.

hey i'll build you some hangers for the cost of material which is about 20 bucks wrangler springs work pretty good also you can use rancho 44044's either one works great i can probably get you a good deal on them too i use to work at a shop manufacturing leaf springs so we can set them up for the correct capcities and heigth.

Interested in wrangler springs. Do thet have the right length so I dont have to outboard teh shackels? What will a set of springs run me?

yah stock yj springs are pretty much the same length as stock toyota. new ones run about 120 each. you can probably picjup some used ones from a wrecking yard for about 35 each front are 4 leaf which will hold up to a stock motor setup nicely. if you want the axle pushed forward the wagoneer springs will work they are the same overall length but the center bolt is 2" offset.

Another big craze is running stock rear yota springs up front. May need to add a leaf or 2 to the spring pack depending on engine weight. Just something else to think about.

built my whole set up on my own


running toyota rear spring up front with a customer spring hanger and
6 in shackles that are .25 flat stock steel

running for ranger rear springs with a 9in shackle in the rear have to move
the hanger forward they are made out of 3.5 in square tubing and welded
to the bottom of the frame


and running for shock mounts up front


let me know if you need help my front hanger is way over kill has some 3/4 in steel as the hangers with a piece of 2in square .25 wall tubing in between with full gusset

if you build your own front hanger make sure it goes down the frame in front about 2-4 inches to keep the frame from cracking.
