hood mounted hi-lift question

Is it legal to mount my hi-lift on my hood, or is there a (legal) peripheral view issue?

Common sense should prevail, doubt Utah's laws cover hi-lifts

If you must carry a hi-ift, at least store it out of the elements or get a bag/case designed as such. The only thing more dangerous than a normal hi-lift is a dirty one.

Right now it is ratcheted down in the back of the Jeep, but was debating about freeing up some space on trips. I am pretty handy with a sewing machine and could make a zip-off/velcro cover for it out of some rip-stop nylon.

Sew one up or buy one of the many on the market (ARB, Hi-Lift, Jackgaurd, etc)... do something to keep the pins, springs and pivots clean and lubricated.

For sure, I have watched someone try using a rusted one before and it almost cost them their hand. Luckily I have never had to use mine on the trail, yet.

I ditched my Hi-Lift when I started packing an exhaust jack... its solved every jack need I've had for it. We've lifted the entire tail end of a loaded 80 Series with it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiIlvFltPX8

I don't like HiLifts at all. Even clean and lubed they aren't that great. Mine is somewhat unpredictable for lowering.... not a happy thing. Better than nothing, but... not by much.

as for mounting one to the hood? Is there anything strong enough on a Jeep to keep it there? Not to my satisfaction there isn't. But have at it, I believe in freedom man.

love my HiLift jack , but ive grown up using them on a farm ( more than just lifting a vehicle) , as far as the O.P. , a HiLift jack on a Jeep hood (CJ, YJ, TJ) really doesent obstruct your view, just be careful if you like your paint

id figure out a way to mount it inside on the wall or something before i would even think of putting it on my hood. The exhaust jacks seem like a much better option and they would save the room you said you want

I can't really tell by your avatar, but it looks like you have a basket or something on your roof? Could you mount it there? At the very least, couldn't the factory cross-brackets (or whatever you want to call them) but utilized somehow?

I have mine mounted on my roof rack. Works great for me. Once a year I coat the pins and springs in grease and I haven't had any problems with rusting. I don't drive my vehicle any more and it is exposed to the elements pretty much year round. I imagine road salt would be harder on one than just sitting...

I have never had a problem with my HiLift and use it quite often. It's predicable if you're careful. With that being said, I'd love one of those exhaust lifts. They are sooo cool.

I would love an exhaust jack, but unless/until I get around to installing a real winch, I'd still want to carry the hilift and some chains.

I used it in anger for the first time a couple weekends ago to get out of some sand, the exhaust jack would have been much better for that. On the other hand, there's the thread about the guy with the stuck lugnuts above ogden who used a spider and hilift to break them free... couldn't have done that with an ex-jack.

It's only dangerous if you use in dangerously... like a gun.

Sew up a bag, throw it on the hood with a lock: tweekers love to steel them.

Mines on the hood. Doesn't obstruct my view at all, then again I'm 6'3" so I sit really high in my LJ. The down side besides the fact it's a hi-lift, is you can't set the hood all the way back with it on or off with the bracket installed.

IMO a highlift is a great tool to have. I've used it as a come along to save my pal from going over into a river...a place where the winch was needed from the front. It saved his a$$. I always lube it with WD before using.
I've also used the handiman in the deep deep snow where no conventional jack would work.
I wouldn't mount it in front of the windshield though. it's exposed to thieves, the elements, and could be a missile in an accident. Looks cool there though

Once I found that if I put the jack at an angle it won't break the tail light this has been awesome.



I do need a cover... and an exhaust jack... I think I would carry both... but I do carry way too much.
